Five on Friday - August 4, 2017

It's Friday!  Let's get ready for the weekend!  There's a whole bunch of states (Virginia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Missouri, Louisiana, Iowa, Ohio, Florida and Arkansas to be exact) having their back to school tax free weekend the next few days.  If you're in the market for clothes, computers or school supplies this is the weekend to shop!  If you are thinking about taking your Apple device to the store for repairs, you might want to wait until Monday.  I have a feeling the lines will be LLLLOOOOONNNNGGGG!

Before you head out, check out my five for this week ~

1.  National Friendship Day
Sunday is National Friendship Day!  Perfect day to reach out to your friends and share some love.  If you're looking for something to do with a friend, participating Starbucks has a deal now through August 7 from 2 pm -5 pm each day where you can buy any Macchiato and get one free!  So grab a friend and head to Starbucks.  Sounds like a great thing to do on National Friendship Day!

2.  Wind River
If you and a friend are planning to celebrate National Friendship Day by going to a movie, you might want to check out Wind River.  Here's what Rotten Tomato has to say about it, "WIND RIVER is a chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) who teams up with a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past (Jeremy Renner) to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving her mysterious death. Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, WIND RIVER also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille, and James Jordan."  Definitely on my list to see!

3.  Class Mom
I ran across this book - Class Mom - and thought it would make the perfect gift for someone who is sending a child to kindergarten.  Amazon sums it up like this, "Jen Dixon is not your typical Kansas City kindergarten class mom—or mom in general. Jen already has two college-age daughters by two different (probably) musicians, and it’s her second time around the class mom block with five-year-old Max—this time with a husband and father by her side. Though her best friend and PTA President sees her as the “wisest” candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree.

From recording parents’ response times to her emails about helping in the classroom, to requesting contributions of “special” brownies for curriculum night, not all of Jen’s methods win approval from the other moms. Throw in an old flame from Jen’s past, a hyper-sensitive “allergy mom,” a surprisingly sexy kindergarten teacher, and an impossible-to-please Real Housewife-wannabe, causing problems at every turn, and the job really becomes much more than she signed up for.

Relatable, irreverent, and hilarious in the spirit of Maria Semple, Class Mom is a fresh, welcome voice in fiction—the kind of novel that real moms clamor for, and a vicarious thrill-read for all mothers, who will be laughing as they are liberated by Gelman’s acerbic truths."

Doesn't it sound funny!  Click HERE to check it out.

4.  Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauces
I always feel like a rock star when I throw something in the slow cooker and it's ready when I walk in the door after work.  Sometimes, though, it's a bit of a challenge to put all the ingredients together before rushing out the door in the morning.  Eric brought home a bag of Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauce and that alleviated that problem!  Just pop your 2-3 pound piece of pork in the slow cooker and pour this bag of goodness over the top.  Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours.  Shred your meat and let it continue to cook for a bit.  Dinner is served!   We loved the Apple Bourbon Pulled Pork and I'm anxious to try a few other flavors.  I bet this Apple Bourbon Pulled Pork would be great with chicken also.

5.  Friday night...
Special shout out to wish our daughter-in-law, Kayla, a very happy birthday today!  She is truly a beautiful person both inside and out.  Our lives are definitely better with her in them.  Happy birthday Kayla!

We are headed to my home town, New Florence, Missouri, for the 136th Annual Old Settler's Picnic.  The volunteers that put this event together do a great job and make it fun for the entire family.  There will be activities for the kids, bingo, a cake walk and the evening will be capped off with a dance.  My dad will be frying fish in the food stand so if you're in the area and want a great sandwich, stop by!  The weather should be perfect too!

  10. Hope your picnic was picture perfect today.

The movie sounds very tempting. My PC is a huge movie buff and visits Rotten Tomatoes before we seen anything and yet we still manage to get a rotten tomato now and then. Wonder if Wind River is based on a book?

Will have to check out those sauces. I am all about my crockpot. Thanks for reviewing them.
