Five on Friday - February 10, 2017

Happy Friday!  Who else is shocked that we are already ten days into February?!?  This week flew by and we have a weekend full of fun ahead of us.  I missed sharing my five with you last week because I was sick in bed with a cold and eye infection.  YUCK!!  So glad that's behind me and I'm on the mend.  And I'm excited to share my five with you this week~

1.  Trifecta in the Sky
It's a skywatcher's paradise tonight with three major events to look out for.  Now I'm not an astronomer so forgive me if my description is a bit basic, but here goes.  First we have the full moon, which is call a snow moon because it's in February.  Next up is the penumbral lunar eclipse.  This is scheduled to occur at 6:43 pm central time (thank goodness because I won't have to haul my butt out of bed to see it).  The penumbral lunar eclipse is more subtle than a total lunar eclipse, but we should still be able to see the moon appear slightly darker than usual.  Then last but not least we have Comet 45P.  Look to the east around 3 a.m. Saturday morning and watch for a bright blue-green "head" with a tail.  Bottom line - look up tonight.  You can see some amazing things!

2.  New Words
Did you hear that the Merriam-Webster dictionary added over 1000 words to its' dictionary?  Boy, that adds a lot of words we can now make in Scramble!  Some of the new words are ~

Throw Shade - publicly criticize or express contempt for someone."if she was really so above it all, she wouldn't have to throw shade"

Binge Watching - the practice of watching multiple episodes of a television program in rapid succession, typically by means of DVDs or digital streaming.  (Already knew the meaning of this word!)

Supercentenarian - a person who is 100 years old or older.

Seussian - of, relating to, or suggestive of the works of Dr. Seuss.

3. National Umbrella Day
Guess what day it is?  It's National Umbrella Day!  If you know me well, you know that sharing an umbrella is something I hate to do.  You see, I'm short and many times if I share my umbrella the person I'm sharing with will hold it so high, I might as well not even be using the device!  Anybody share this issue with me?  Hope no one actually has to use one today, but Happy Umbrella Day!

National Umbrella Day - February 10

Every morning before I roll out of bed I read my daily devotional from Daily Wisdom for Women.  It amazes me how many times the message is just what I need to hear.  The daily reading is short, sweet and only takes a couple of minutes to complete.  It's such an inspirational way to start the day!  If you're looking for a positive way to begin your day, you can get your copy HERE.

  1. OOO thanks for the heads up on all the things in the sky! I'd like to say that I'll drag my butt out of bed at 3 am but we'll see because I'm moving at 7 am ha. I am not a fan of this full moon business on a Friday though. I'm now nervous to see how my students act today lol.

That snow funny made me lol. So true. Growing up in MN I never understood how on the first snow fall people just forgot what snow was. I mean come on's on the ground more than it's not in MN.

  2. I'm the idiot! (I've never driven in snow until this year! I always feel ultra-paranoid that I'm going to slip off the road!)

  3. (raises hand) I totally agree with your umbrella thoughts!! The only way I'll share if its one of those super huge ones and the taller person has to hold it. Have a fun weekend :)

  4. Love your Five on Friday this week!
    Have a fab weekend!

  5. Ooooh I love that "Seussian" appears on the dictionary now :) lol @ throwing shade -- I have maybe used this once or twice ;)

Thanks for the heads-up re: sky activity! Will have to remember to look up :)

  6. Love this!! I'm the idiot that forgets how to drive too!! I get SO scared on the snowy roads. Have a great, safe weekend!!

  7. So glad to hear you're feeling better! I think Seussian is my fave! Hope you're having a great weekend!

  8. Hey Penny! I hope your weekend has been great.
We've had a ton of snow and thus clouds, so no visible moon these last few days. I have been Face-timing with my mom down in Barbados and she's been showing me the moon. It's been incredible.

Cheers to a good week my friend! Xo

  9. Hi Penny!! Love all the new is the 100th day of school where I teach, I think I'll let the kids know about supercentarian! And I am off to look up that devotional. Glad you are feeling better!! Have a great valentine's day!
