Thinking Out Loud Thursday - March 5, 2015

Hey, hey everyone!  Welcome to Thursday.  Thanks for stopping by Thinking Out Loud Thursday with me and Vanessa from X-tremely V.
                                                      X-tremely V

Here's some things I'm thinking out loud about today.  Last night, me and two friends from work decided at the last minute to go out to dinner when we finished our day.  We chose Pei Wei Asian Diner (delicious by the way).  Take a look at the message in my fortune cookie:

Big journeys begin with a single step.  How true is that statement!  But sometimes isn't taking that first step so, so hard?  I know that when I get overwhelmed with "stuff", sometimes I just shut down.  I become paralyzed and can't take that first step to start the momentum of moving forward.  Can you relate?

A trick I try is setting a timer.  Set the timer for 15 minutes and attack your task.  Fifteen minutes doesn't sound very long and usually I can convince myself that I can do it for that length of time. Take that single step.  Amazing what you can get done in fifteen minutes.  And don't forget to celebrate your accomplishments.  Don't look at the things you didn't get done, but do a little happy dance for the things you did.

Have you ever tried this technique?  Got any others that would be great to try?  I'm open for suggestions.

Yeah -- all this thinking out loud started over a fortune cookie.

Hope you link up below.  We'd love to hear from you!

  1. All great journeys start with a single step & in the online marketing world this is often reffered to when newbies get started as it is always the action takers who see success which always starts with that first step!

Keep up the great work :)

  2. I totally forgot about the "thinking out loud Thursday" posts! I've been meaning to do that. I mean, I guess today's post (going live in a couple of hours lol) is sort of similar.

I love the fortune you recieved in your cookie, and I have to say - ain't that the truth. The first step may always be the hardest, but it's worth it.

Happy almost weekend to you :)

  5. That first step is always the most difficult, isn't it? At least in our minds. I like the 15 minute timer idea.

  6. I agree that in every successes, a small and first step took place. Starting up is hard but once you build yourself up there, it is a lot easier. Now maintaining it takes a lot of patience and hard work.

  7. I love the 15 minute timer idea! But sometimes my kids won't even give me 15 minutes! LOL

  8. You are correct---sometimes the first step is the hardest. But I really like your timer idea. I can do anything for 15 minutes, right?

  10. These are great tips! I have to admit, I'm guilty of adding my daily chores to the list just so I can have the satisfaction of crossing them off. Another tip I would offer is to use Workflowy. It's a no-frills online option of tracking your to-do lists (with an app you can also load on your smartphone) so that you don't have multiple handwritten lists laying all over the place.

  11. I remember back in January when my daughter suggested I begin blogging. I remember saying to her, "no, there is no way I'll have time for that." Well, I remember her saying, "just take the first step, write something and see where it goes." Here I am almost two months later. And, Penny, guess what I do in 15 minutes, check my blog!

  13. Yep it took me a while to learn that it truly does only take 1 single step. Opens up a lot of doors, and can make a big difference if you just take that step! Great post!

  14. I always have trouble with not thinking too far ahead. I need to take it one step at a time. This is a great reminder of that.

  15. That is a great fortune! And a great way to think :) I need to do it more often!

  16. Great fortune and I LOVE Pei Wei!! I find myself loving one item on their menu over and over again and then changing it every few months. Right now I am on a Pad Tai kick!

  18. It's so hard to build momentum when taking on something new. Taking this first step is a real challenge.

  19. I have never tried setting a timer. I will have to. I usually watch the clock. Sometimes I impress myself. Sometimes it's like wow, sure took me a long time to do that. Timer sounds like a great idea.

  20. I like the idea of just doing something fifteen minutes. It is my guess that fifteen will turn into 20 and 30 and then whatever you need it to be...if you keep giving it a go. :)

  21. It is always great to see what a single action can lead to. It can be hard to remember how important it is!

  22. I love your fortune cookies note. It is so true. You cannot accomplish a big journey overnight.

  23. I will have to use that method particularly for literally taking the first step. I want to exercise but I have a million reasons why I shouldn't (my daughter will be bored, people will laugh, it won't help, a gym costs too much, parking is hard to find at the track, etc.etc.!). I will try walking for 15 minutes. Once I get started, I like it, it is just getting started that's so hard!

  25. Yes, very interesting indeed, but I've never really been afraid of anything. I do it first & then worry about it later I guess or even I look at it and even if it appears difficult I just do the best I can because that's all I can do my dad use to tell me. How can you do more than your very best?
