Five on Friday - January 31, 2025

Happy Friday!  Can you believe this is the last day of January?!?  This month has flown by.  I'm so glad to have one month of winter down and springtime is that much closer.  So, let's get to the last Five on Friday for the month ~

1.  2025 Grammy Awards
Sunday night we can watch the 67th Annual Grammy Awards!  This year's event will air on Sunday, February 2 on CBS starting at 7:00 pm Central.  In addition to all the musical performances, the show will highlight stories of heroism and community response to the wildfire crisis, with information about the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort, a charitable fund created by the Recording Academy and MusiCares.  If you'd like to take a behind the scenes peek at how the night comes together, Inside The 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards will air tonight (Friday, January 31) on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

2.  New Coke Flavor
Tired of all the soda flavors out there?  Get ready - Coke has a new flavor coming to stores the first part of February!  Orange Cream Coca-Cola is a "delicious taste of Coca-Cola infused with refreshing orange and smooth, creamy vanilla flavors".  Hmmmm.  I'm not sure about this one.  Will you be trying it?

Searching for the perfect Valentine's Day gift for kids that doesn’t involve candy? Look no further than Laugh Out Loud Valentine's Jokes for Kids! With 144 pages of hilarious jokes, this book is guaranteed to spark laughter and provide endless entertainment for the entire family.

I'm always admiring my friend Sherry's lipstick at work.  Somehow it stays on for hours and looks like it's freshly applied.  I asked her about it this week and she revealed it is Maybelline Super Stay Ink Crayon.  I immediately popped it in my Amazon cart and had it the next day.  This stuff is amazing!  The one I got was named 25 Stay Exceptional.  Love it!

5.  I can relate to this...

Have a fantastic weekend! We’re excited for dinner with friends on Saturday and spending time with our son and daughter-in-law on Sunday—fun times ahead! We’ll also be keeping an eye on the groundhog’s prediction Sunday. If he sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter, but if not, we can look forward to an early spring!

New York in December!

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday where I talk about something on my mind and invite you to link up and do the same.  Today I'm looking back to my last trip of 2024 and sharing some of the details!

Last year was an amazing year of travel for me! I managed to take a fun trip almost every month. My final trip of the year, in December, was with two of my current work friends. None of us had ever seen the Rockettes perform at Christmastime in New York, so we decided it was the perfect time to change that!

We boarded a plane early on Saturday morning bound for the Big Apple and arrived starving around lunchtime.

We dropped our bags at the Airbnb apartment we rented and headed out to find food.  We stumbled into a pizza joint not far from our place called Mama's and decided that was going to be lunch.  Best decision ever!  The pizza in this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant was so, so good!  The price was also remarkably cheap.  I would seriously seek it out on future trips to have that pizza again.

With our hunger tamed, we headed to the subway, boarded a train, and arrived in Times Square.

Times Square on this Saturday evening was hopping!  We took in the carolers singing, the lights and of course we had to see the tree on Rockefeller Plaza!

After visiting some Christmas street markets and taking in the sights, we made our way to Osteria Delbianco for our dinner reservation.  It felt good to sit down in the warm environment, enjoy a cocktail and relive our adventures from the day.

Sunday was a whirlwind of activity, and we were constantly on the go! Our day began with a reservation for tea at the iconic Russian Tea Room. I absolutely love high tea, and this venue was nothing short of breathtaking. We were seated on the second floor and treated like royalty. With Christmas music softly playing in the background and gorgeous holiday decorations all around, the atmosphere was pure magic.

After an amazing time at the Russian Tea Room, we hurried over to the Lena Horne Theater for our tickets to see SIX. Watching a Broadway play was on our must-do list, and this one was an excellent choice!

After the show, we hopped into a rickshaw and sang and laughed our way to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Little did we know what we were getting ourselves into when we climbed aboard! Despite asking the driver several times about the cost, he kept saying it was nine dollars. Turns out, it was $9 per minute! Lesson learned! Even so, it was such a fun experience and one we’ll always remember.

We arrived at St. Patrick’s just in time for the 4:00 pm Mass. Once we had settled in and the service began, we realized it was entirely in Spanish! While we didn’t understand much of the language, the music was absolutely incredible, and simply being in the church made it all worthwhile. The building’s beauty is truly breathtaking!

When the service was over, we spilled back out onto the streets of New York.  We had just enough time grab some dinner and make our way to Radio City Music Hall.  Seeing the Rockettes was the reason for the trip and we were about to fulfill that mission!

The show was stellar and did not disappoint!  It was worth the trip to see them!  It was the perfect way to end the day and something we will always be glad we had the opportunity to see.

Monday morning we were up before the sun so we could go to the taping of the Today Show.  It was a last-minute decision that we would try to get on the Plaza for the show and we were able to do it!

I had asked Eric to tape the show so I could see it when I got home and, luckily for us, there was an adorable lady from Iowa who had huge face posters of Al Roker.  She had faces for us to hold and it made spotting us in the crowd extremely easy!

When the show was finished, we stopped one more time to see the tree at Rockefeller Center.  Then we headed straight for breakfast!  A staff member of the Today Show recommended the Tipsy Bakery in Rockefeller Center.  We were able to get a great breakfast and warm up.

We had just enough time to swing through the Christmas market at Bryan Square before we needed to get to the airport to head home.

What a way to celebrate the season!  When I left my job of nearly 30 years a few years ago, one of my biggest concerns was leaving behind the friendships I had built. I worried I wouldn't be able to form the same kind of connections in a new workplace. But this trip has completely erased that fear. I've been fortunate to develop meaningful friendships in my new role, and it makes me feel incredibly blessed!

Five on Friday - January 24, 2025

Oh my goodness - am I glad to see Friday arrive!  Even though we were off work on Monday, it seemed like the longest week.  I'm ready to curl up in front of the fire with a good book and relax the weekend away.  Before I get to that, here are my five for this week.

1.  National Compliment Day
Today is National Compliment Day!  Like what someone is wearing?  Did someone do a great job on a report at work?  Has someone made you feel special?  Today's the day to let them know!  Giving someone a compliment (even when it's not National Compliment Day) has many benefits for both the giver and the recipient.  For the recipient, it can boost their confidence, increase positivity, strengthen your relationship and reinforce positive behaviors.  For the giver, it fosters gratitude, creates connection, boosts your mood and encourages empathy.  Both the giver and the receiver benefit!  A small, genuine compliment can have a ripple effect of positivity for everyone involved!

2.  Flight Risk
The movie Flight Risk opens today.  I'm so intrigued to see it, but not for a reason you would probably guess.  From the previews, it shows the star Mark Wahlberg with no hair on the top of his head!  What?!?  And why??  Anyway, it looks pretty good to me despite the not-so-great reviews.  Here's the summary ~
In this high-stakes suspense thriller, Academy Award® nominee Mark Wahlberg (Actor in a Supporting Role, 2006 -- The Departed) plays a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.

3.  Carrie Underwood:  Reflection Movie
If staying home and streaming a movie from the comfort of your couch sounds better than going out this weekend, a new movie called Carrie Underwood: Reflection Movie is premiering on Hulu and Disney Plus.  It looks good!  Here's the summary ~
In celebration of her critically acclaimed Las Vegas residency show “REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency,” eight-time GRAMMY® Award winner Carrie Underwood will showcase her successful career as a worldwide superstar in this exclusive concert special.
The much anticipated third book in the Empyrean series is out!  It hit the stands on Tuesday and is getting great reviews.  It might take a bit to read this one - it's 757 pages long!  Here's the summary ~
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.

But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.
Reading Order:
Book #1 Fourth Wing
Book #2 Iron Flame
Book #3 Onyx Storm
5.  My kind of princess...

Have a fantastic weekend! I’m planning to wrap up my Valentine’s Day decorating and finish my book club book before Monday. Plus, we’re excited for the big Chiefs game on Sunday! See you next week!

Amazon Products for the Bathroom You Didn’t Know You Needed

Hello and welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday.  This is a time when I share something I'm thinking about and invite you to link up and do the same.  Today, I’m thinking about a few Amazon finds in our bathroom that make my daily routine a little easier and more enjoyable.

Our master bathroom is where I start every workday.  I get up and head straight into the bathroom where I spend the next 45ish minutes getting ready for work.  Then I dash through the kitchen on my way out the door.  Here's a few items we have in our bathroom that helps get my day off to a good start.

We like to keep the house a little cooler at night, which means it's pretty cold in the bathroom when we get up.  Instead of heating the whole house for the short time we are getting ready in the morning, we've purchased a small space heater to heat the bathroom.  The heater makes the bathroom nice and toasty in a very short period of time!

This summer, the apartment we stayed at in London had a towel warmer.  Eric got to hear every day how much I loved it!  Thankfully he remember how much joy the towel warmer brought me when we were on vacation and gifted me one for my birthday.  It's been so nice to pop the towel in before I get in the shower and wrap myself in in its warmth when I get out!  The unit we have will also fold up for easy storing when it's not in use.

No more digging around in drawers or makeup bags to find my essential brushes and products.  They are all housed in this spinning organizer!  I don't even know how much time I've saved looking for my stuff because now it's neatly tucked in this spinning organizer.  Mine is a cream color, but if that's not your jam there are several other colors available.

It amazes me how much easier our glass shower doors are to keep clean if we take just a second to squeegee off the water after our showers!  I went through several plastic ones before landing on this metal version.  The hook adheres to the shower so it's always easy to reach.  If you don't already have one of these, get one immediately and start seeing how much easier keeping your glass shower doors can be!

Our bathroom doesn't have but one towel rack and really not a lot of wall space to add another one.  Our shower door has one, but I like to keep decorative towels hanging on it.  These suction cup hooks to the rescue!  They stick right to our glass shower wall and hold our oversized bath towels with ease.  They would also be great to hang a robe on.

Now it's your turn.  What are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!
