Five on Friday - February 1, 2019

It's Friday!  Let's all clap our hands and get ready for a weekend!  January is gone and one month of winter is behind us.  We have had some horrific cold days this week, but the weekend forecast is much better.  We just need to get through today!

Before we head off into the weekend, here's my five for this week ~

1.  Groundhog Day
Tomorrow will be the day we'll know if we're in for another six weeks of winter or if spring will come early.  If the groundhog sees his shadow, the prediction is we're in for six more weeks of winter.  If he doesn't see his shadow, spring is just around the corner.

Here's some interesting information I found about Groundhog Day from the NationalDayCalendar.com:
"The tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday, Candlemas. Clergy would bless candles symbolizing the ‘light of the world’ to give to their congregations. Another tradition associated with this day is eating crepes. Germans practiced the art of predicting the winter with a hedgehog until their arrival in the United States when they settled in the hills of Pennsylvania, and the groundhog became the official predictor."

2.  Heart Shaped Pasta at Costco
Do you like to enjoy your Valentine's dinner at home?  Here's an idea of what you can serve - Italian Four Cheese Heart Shaped Pasta from Costco!  Be on the lookout for this Nouvo Pasta filled with ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan and aged Asiago to make your Valentine's dinner special.  It comes in two 20-ounce packages for a total of $10.  Has anyone seen it in their Costco?

3.  Tea Time Magazine
My friend Carol gave me a subscription to Tea Time magazine for Christmas and my first edition came in the mail this week.  Oh.My.Gosh -- it's fabulous!  Full of beautiful pictures and mouth-watering recipes, this magazine could quickly become one of my favorites!  Just leafing through it made me dream of having a tea party.  Click HERE if you want to have a magazine to enjoy while you are sipping your morning brew.

4.  Journals from Anthropologie
Look at these adorable journals from Anthropologie!  What a wonderful Valentine's gift these would make.  The set is $16.  They could easily be separated to make three separate gifts for friends.  Or you could keep them all for yourself and be ready to journal your little heart out.  They would really dress up your desk!

5.  My kind of exercise....

Have a wonderful weekend!  We are looking forward to going to a birthday party tomorrow night for a friend I used to work with and then I fly out bright and early Sunday morning for a work trip.  I'm going to try to pack in as much fun as I can before flying off for a long week of work.

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - January 31, 2019

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday!  Hope you link up below and share what you are thinking out loud about today.

Today I'm thinking about the third installment of my reflections from Rachel Hollis's movie Made for More and the coaching session she shared at the end.  That girl talks my motivational language!  Today I'm sharing my thoughts on her bullet item Community.

What does Rachel mean by the word "community"?  In her coaching session, community is the people who surround you.  Who do you hang out with?  Who are your besties?  Do they pull you up?  Or do they make you stressed or sad or angry?  Are they motivating you to be your best self?

I'm so very lucky to have a spouse who is super supportive of me in all my endeavors.  Sometimes, though, I encourage him to be a bit tougher on me.  I want him to be the person that makes me go for a walk or doesn't say yes when I ask him if he wants to go for ice cream.  Sometimes by being the guy that says no is really helping me.  By encouraging me to take that walk or not eat that ice cream is encouraging me to be a better version of myself.

My friends are also great sources of encouragement.  Do you have friends you know you can count on no matter what?  Thankfully, I do.  I also have friends that are more surface friends.  We don't have those deep conversations that help you grow as an individual.  It takes a lot of trust to be able to speak openly with someone and know that your honesty isn't meant to hurt them, but meant to introduce a new point of view to the circumstance.

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn says that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.  Think about that for a minute.  Who are your five people?  Do their words and actions encourage you to be the best person you can be?  Do they pull you up?

Now flip that thought.  You are on someone's list of five.  Your spouse.  Your kids.  What kind of influence are you in their lives?  Do you encourage and motivate them to be their best selves?

As we usher in February, the month of love and kindness, it's the perfect time to put some effort into your "community".  What a wonderful time to dig in and be the best friend you can be.  Think about your five and being one of someone else's five.  Let's make an impact on our community!

Next Thursday I'll be thinking out loud about my morning routine.  What's your morning routine?  Does it get your day off to get a great start?

Now it's your turn.  What are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!

Five on Friday - January 25, 2019

We've made it to Friday!!  I'm just a little bit excited to have a weekend ahead of us.  This week has been super busy and I'm looking forward to having a few days to breath and catch up.

Here's my five for this week~

1.  Postage Stamps
As I mentioned on my post from Monday, postage stamps are going up this Sunday.  A regular stamp now costs 50 cents and come Sunday it will be 55 cents.  Stock up on your Forever stamps now and save a few dollars.  Remember when Forever stamps started?  It first went on sale April 12, 2007 and cost only 41 cents.  Too bad I didn't buy a boat load of them then!

2.  National Spouses Day
Guess what tomorrow is?  It's National Spouses Day!  I'm so darn lucky to have a wonderful spouse and I really don't tell him often enough how much I appreciate him.  (Love you, Eric!!  My life just wouldn't be the same without you!)  Tomorrow would be a great day to leave a little love note for your significant other.

National Spouses Day - January 26

Last Fall, I bought some pillows from Amazon and have been getting different covers for them each holiday.  Just got my Valentine ones and they are so adorable!!  My couch is definitely looking like cupid was there!  Once you invest in the pillows, the covers are so economical to switch out.  I have no idea why it took me this long to do this!  Click the links below to start your pillow cover collection.

4.  Serenity
Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway are hitting the big screen together this weekend in a new thriller, Serenity.  The previews look so captivating!  It's definitely going on the list of movies I want to see.  Here's the synopsis from Fandango ~
From the creative mind of Oscar nominee Steven Knight comes a daringly original, sexy, stylized thriller. Baker Dill (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey) is a fishing boat captain leading tours off a tranquil, tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His quiet life is shattered, however, when his ex-wife Karen (Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway) tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. She begs Dill to save her – and their young son – from her new, violent husband (Jason Clarke) by taking him out to sea on a fishing excursion, only to throw him to the sharks and leave him for dead. Karen’s appearance thrusts Dill back into a life he’d tried to forget, and as he struggles between right and wrong, his world is plunged into a new reality that may not be all that it seems.

5.  Freak someone out....

Have a great weekend!  I'm planning on doing quite a bit of reading.  A friend and I are going to an author event Monday night and her book just came out last week.  It's The War Sisters.  The author, Lynda Cohen Loigman, is doing an appearance in St. Louis and I'm excited to hear her.  Hope I can get finished with the book before the event!  Wish me luck!

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - January 24, 2019

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday!  So glad you popped in to see what I'm thinking out loud about today.  Be sure to link up below and share what's on your mind.

For the next few weeks, my Thinking Out Loud post is following the five coaching tips Rachel Hollis mentioned at the back end of her movie Made for More.  She hit on five areas that could enhance your overall happiness and today we're talking about item number 2 - Personal Environment.

When Rachel first said the words "personal environment", I wondered where she was going with that.  When she expanded the thought, she is talking about your overall health and how you feel.  Man, I know I have soooooo much to work on in this category!  And I also know how good I feel when I'm eating right and exercising.  But the truth is, I don't eat right and exercise nearly enough!  As I sit here writing this post thinking about how I treat my body, I feel like crawling under a rock.  My body deserves so much more than I'm giving it!  How about you - are you treating your body the best you can?

Since I can't in good conscience type out helpful hints or things I do to keep my body at it's peak, I can remind you of some annual checkups we should all make sure are on our calendars.  I'm not a doctor (and I don't play one on TV), but a little research shows we should schedule the following ~

Mammograms
The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so.  Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.  Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.

Visit Your Gynecologist
Here's something I didn't know -- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that girls first see a gynecologist when they're between the ages of 13 and 15.  You can read more on that HERE.  For us older ladies, make sure you're getting a pap smear every three years.

Dentist
Who likes to go to the dentist?!?  But it's important for overall good health.  Suck it up and make that yearly appointment to get your pearly whites all clean and shiny.

Eye Doctor
Even if you don't wear corrective lens, the Mayo Clinic recommends you have your eyes checked every 5 to 10 years in your 20s and 30s.  Every 2 to 4 years from 40 to 54.  Every one to three years from 55 to 64.  Every one to two years after age 65.

Becoming more healthy is the first item on my list of goals for 2019.  I'm trying hard to drink more water and do more taking the stairs at work.  Small steps!  What are some of the things that you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Next Thursday I'll be sharing some thoughts on community.  Who are you spending your time with?  Are they people that pull you up and bring you down?

Now it's your turn - link up and share what you're thinking out loud about today!

Weekending - January 18, 2019

Hello Monday!  I know many of you might be off work today, but for me it's a normal work day.  The upside to having to work on holidays like today is the traffic is usually extremely light and it's an easy breezy commute.  #lookingonthebrightside

Our plans for the weekend were very low key because the weather was predicted to be horrible again.  Thank goodness they kind of missed the predicted about of snow fall and we didn't have to shovel one time!

Usually on the weekends we do a lot of eating out.  Since the weather forecast didn't look the greatest, I decided to pop in the grocery store on my way home Friday night and stock up.  I loaded up on comfort food and we were set for the weekend!

On Saturday morning we got up early and headed to the theater to see On The Basis of Sex, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg movie.  We both loved it!  What an inspiration she is!  Wonder if this movie will get any Academy Award nods?  We don't have long to wait because they are announcing all the nominations tomorrow morning.  Regardless if it is nominated, it's definitely a movie worth watching in my opinion.

Most of Saturday afternoon was spent curled up in my favorite chair in the bedroom, sipping hot tea and reading Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher.  I start this novel just after Christmas and it had a rather slow start.  I had almost given up on it, but around page 75 things picked up and I had a hard time putting it down.  Rosamunde Pilcher has several other books.  Anyone read others of hers?  Any recommendations?  Here's the synopsis of Winter Solstice from Amazon:
In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people....
Elfrida Phipps, once of London's stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life -- shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name -- still she finds herself lonely.
Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.
Carrie returns from Austria at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt's awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.
Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.
It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.
It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher's long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.
                          Winter Solstice by [Pilcher, Rosamunde]

Eric had a great find on Saturday.  For Christmas I had given him a tea steeper from Adagio Teas similar to one I use all the time that came from Teavana.  He was looking on their website and they have a list of Teavana alternative teas!  So, if you are missing your favorite tea from Teavana, check out Adagio Teas website and see if they have something similar.

Sunday was spent dragging out our Valentine's decorations and watching football.  Unfortunately, the outcome of both games did not line up with who we were hoping would win.

Here we are at Monday and I'm facing a new to do list.  One thing on my list this week is to purchase some Forever stamps.  The price of stamps is going up on Sunday, January 27 from 50 cents to 55 cents.  Buy your Forever stamps this week and avoid the price increase!

This week on the blog look forward to the Wonderful Wednesday link up that goes live on Tuesday evening.  I'll also be hosting a link up on Thinking Out Loud Thursday about Personal Environment, a post about your personal health and how you feel.  And then on Friday we have Friday Favorites and Five on Friday.  Hope to see you back for all these posts!

Five on Friday - January 18, 2019

Happy Friday guys!  I'm so glad we have a weekend ahead of us.  They are calling for more snow, but I'm almost excited about that because I have a few projects around the house I would love to get finished and if it's snowing there's a greater likelihood I'll stay put in the house and get them done!

Check out my five for this week ~

1.  Grace and Frankie
The above mentioned projects around my house may have to be put on hold because there's a strong possibility I'll be binge watching the new season of Grace and Frankie that is being dropped today by Netflix.  Are you a fan?  Jane Fonda (Grace) and Lily Tomlin (Frankie) are perfect for their roles in this comedy and I can't wait to see what kind of trouble they get into this season.  This is the fifth season for the show.  Good news was also announced earlier this week - Netflix has already renewed the show for a sixth season in 2020!

2.  National Popcorn Day
One of my favorite foods is being celebrated tomorrow - Popcorn!  I love almost any variety you put in front of me.  Several years ago I got into the habit of making it at home with my Whirly Pop popcorn maker and getting kind of fancy with it.  You can add a little sugar with the oil and popcorn kernels to make the best kettle corn you'll ever taste!  Think I'll whip up a batch tomorrow to celebrate National Popcorn Day!

NATIONAL POPCORN DAY - January 19

3.  Reese's Bouquet
With Valentine's Day right around the corner, this might be something you are very interested in.  Walmart is selling a Reese's bouquet that consists of 36 packs of peanut butter cups.  36 packs!!  If you want to make the candy lover on your list overjoyed this Valentine's Day, click HERE at get this baby delivered!

4.  Bottle Lights
Every year for Christmas, my friend Tracy gives us a bag of her favorite things.  Remember when Oprah used to do the shows where she gave away her favorite things?  This is very similar!  The goodies in her package are always so cool!  Well this year was no different and I'm so in love with one of the items I can't help but share it with you.  These super cool bottles lights are to die for!  I'm so excited she gave us some and can't wait to use them.  My current goal is to drink more wine so I'll have some empty bottles to use them in!  Click here to get a set for yourself!

5.  New year...

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - January 17, 2019

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday!  So glad you popped in to see what I'm thinking out loud about today.  Be sure to link up below and share what's on your mind.

If you read my Thinking Out Loud post from last week, you knowing the topic for today is physical environment.  I have been on a real Rachel Hollis streak lately and truly enjoyed not only reading her Girl, Wash Your Face book but also went to see her limited release movie called Made for More.  At the end of the movie, she did a little coaching session and hit on the topic of how your physical environment can enhance your overall happiness.  The more I thought about it (and the more honest I was with myself), the more I realized how true that statement was for me!  Is it true for you too?

Rachel is a say-it-like-it-is kind of gal and talked about how if your physical environment is cluttered and unorganized, there's a real chance your overall well being is going to be cluttered and unorganized too.  As much as I would like to believe that's not the case for me, I know deep in my heart it is.  Sadly, I'm such a clutter bug.  Keeping an area tidy just doesn't come naturally to me.  Marie Kondo, Ms. Tidying Up, I am not!

In an effort to make 2019 the best year yet, I'm going out on a limb to get the clutter bug in me to hit the road and be gone.  I'd also like to drag you along with me.  A few months ago, I did a deep dive into my closet and have worked super hard at keeping the area free of clothes and shoes being tossed everywhere.  Now when I enter the space to get dressed for the day, it's a much calmer environment.  This is proof positive that the hard work in keeping this physical environment tidy really does make me feel better.

I think one of the most important things is to identify spaces in your world that makes you feel calm and relaxed.  I have intentionally carved out a few spaces in our home where I can take solace from a stressful day.  Do you have areas in your home that serve as your special spot?  By no means do I want to come across like the areas I've set aside are always perfect!  Lord knows sometimes my special reading spot in the corner of our bedroom looks like this ~

And other times sitting there reading would be impossible because the space is looking like this ~

It's all a work in process, right?!?  I think the important thing is to identify spaces and objects that put a smile on your face, brings your blood pressure down and adds joy to your life.  We all have them - it's just a matter of identifying what and where they are.

Not long ago, I started being a tea drinker.  My friend, Linda, gave me my first pretty cup.  Just holding it, letting the warmth from the hot liquid soak into my hands, brings a smile to my face. More tea drinking with this cup needs to happen!  What brings you this kind of joy?  Shouldn't we all be identifying the items that bring us joy and using the heck out of them!

One of the hardest areas in our roost for me to keep clean is my craft room.  I have layers of projects taking up every crook and cranny of space.  There's going to be a true focus in that room this year!  I want the area to be magazine beautiful, but that has only happened like three times in the last 10 years.  The me I want to be, the best me possible, is going to whip this space into shape!  The saying over the closet sums it up pretty well ~ Nobody can be exactly like me.  Sometimes even I have trouble doing it.

What's going on with your physical environment?  What's your goals for that space in 2019?  Looking forward to hearing from you!  Link up and share your thoughts!

Get ready -- next week the topic for Thinking Out Loud Thursday is going to be Personal Environment - how is your health and what can be done to get on track health-wise.

Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop - January 16, 2019

Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop

Welcome to our party!

This week we are introducing the new Inlinkz format for adding your blog posts to the party. It is pretty straight forward but there is an initial sign-up step.
At first, I wasn't so sure that I was going to like it. It asks you to "sign up" with email. If you are like me, you are probably a little tired with signing up for this and registering for that.
So, I did it on another party to try it out. It is easy, thank goodness. Nice thing, too, is that you only have to do it one time. When I attended other parties that are also using the new Inlinkz, I was so happy to find that I was all set. I did not have to sign up again. For some of you, this is no big deal since you have already registered through another party. Yippee!
Blessings ... Sinea (party admin.)
