A Whirlwind 24 Hours in Nashville

Hi!  Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday.  This is a time when I share something I'm thinking about and invite you to link up and do the same.  Today I'm reflecting on our recent trip to Nashville.  We had roughly 24 hours in the Music City and made the most of it!

My friend Debbie and I are both huge Ed Sheeran fans, so the minute he announced his Loop Tour, we started looking at the schedule to figure out which city would work best for us. After comparing dates and locations, Nashville quickly rose to the top of the list. We decided it would be even more fun to turn it into a little getaway, so we invited our husbands to come along. Before long, all the pieces had fallen into place, and our 24-hour Nashville adventure was officially on the calendar!

Nashville is only about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from our house, making it the perfect destination for a quick weekend getaway. The plan was simple: hit the road Saturday morning, enjoy everything we could fit into our time in Music City, and head home Sunday afternoon. With just about 24 hours to explore, eat, laugh, and soak it all in, we were determined to make every minute count!

Our first stop was the iconic Loveless Cafe, a Nashville landmark that's been serving Southern comfort food since 1951. Famous for its made-from-scratch biscuits, homemade preserves, and legendary fried chicken, it's one of those places that's worth visiting for the experience alone. We couldn't pass up the fried chicken, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and paired with all the classic Southern sides, it was a meal to remember. Of course, no visit to Loveless is complete without one of their warm, buttery biscuits slathered with homemade jam. It was the perfect way to begin our 24 hours in Music City.

After lunch, we headed to the hotel to get checked in and fresh up before the main event - the concert!  We stayed at the Motto Hotel by Hilton,  a boutique hotel right in the heart of downtown Nashville. One of the biggest perks was its location; we were able to walk to the stadium, which made getting to and from the concert incredibly easy.

The rooms were definitely on the smaller side, but they were thoughtfully designed and had everything we needed for a one-night stay. Since hotel prices in downtown Nashville can be pretty steep, we felt like we found a great value. The combination of a clean, comfortable room and such a convenient location made it the perfect home base for our quick 24-hour Nashville adventure.

The concert started early and had three opening acts.  We made our way to the stadium and had plenty of time to both enjoy two of the three openers and scope out the concessions and souvenirs.  There's always something fun about the atmosphere before a big concert. Thousands of fans wearing Ed Sheeran T-shirts filled the stadium, everyone buzzing with anticipation and counting down the minutes until the main event. It was the perfect chance to grab a snack, snap a few photos, and take it all in before the lights dimmed and the real show began.

Before long, the lights dimmed, the crowd leaped to its feet, and Ed Sheeran appeared on stage. The stadium instantly erupted with cheers as thousands of fans sang, screamed, and welcomed him with deafening applause. It was one of those moments that gives you goosebumps.

He was everything we had hoped for and more. With just his guitar, his incredible loop pedal, and an endless amount of talent and energy, he captivated the entire stadium from the very first song. His vocals were flawless, his storytelling between songs felt genuine and personal, and he had a way of making a stadium full of people feel like an intimate performance. Every song had the crowd singing at the top of their lungs, and it was impossible not to smile while taking it all in. It was one of those concerts that reminds you why live music is such a special experience.

After an incredible three-hour performance, we walked out of the stadium even bigger Ed Sheeran fans than when we walked in. Every minute of the show was packed with hit after hit, and his energy never seemed to fade. It's amazing to watch one person command a stadium with nothing more than extraordinary talent, a guitar, and a loop pedal.

As we joined the sea of happy concertgoers making their way through downtown Nashville, we couldn't stop talking about our favorite moments and songs. The entire trip had been worth it for those three unforgettable hours. If Ed ever announces another tour within driving distance, you can bet we'll be trying to get tickets again. It was a concert we'll be talking about for years to come.

We kicked off Sunday morning with breakfast at another one of our Nashville favorites—Puckett's. Whenever we're in town, it's one of those places we always hope to visit. The welcoming atmosphere, Southern hospitality, and hearty comfort food make it the perfect way to start the day.  After the excitement of the concert the night before, it was nice to slow down, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and relive all our favorite moments from the show.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. We'd walked past it countless times on previous trips to Nashville but had never taken the time to go inside. This visit finally gave us the perfect opportunity, and we're so glad we did.

The museum is a dream for anyone who loves country music. We spent our time wandering through the exhibits, taking in the incredible collection of memorabilia, stage costumes, handwritten lyrics, instruments, awards, and artifacts that tell the story of country music through the decades. It was fascinating to see pieces connected to so many legendary artists, as well as today's biggest stars. Every turn seemed to reveal another display that made us stop, read, and reminisce about songs and performers we've loved over the years.

If you've never been inside, I highly recommend adding it to your Nashville itinerary. Even if you're only a casual country music fan, the museum does an excellent job of showcasing the history, artistry, and impact of the genre.

Before heading home, we made one final stop in Nashville's charming 12South District for a little retail therapy. With its locally owned boutiques, colorful murals, and inviting atmosphere, it's one of my favorite neighborhoods to stroll. Even if you don't buy a thing, it's a fun place to wander and soak up the Nashville vibe.

Sometimes you don't need a week-long vacation to make wonderful memories. Our 24 hours in Nashville were packed with delicious food, great shopping, incredible music, and lots of laughter, but the very best part was getting to share it all with dear friends. From singing along at the top of our lungs during the Ed Sheeran concert to chatting over breakfast and exploring the city together, every moment reminded me that it's the people you're with who make a trip truly special. Nashville gave us another unforgettable weekend, and I'm already looking forward to the next adventure we can take together!

Weekending - November 13, 2020

Welcome to a new week!  Monday got here pretty fast, but Eric and I are still off for a few days so the weekend is continuing for us.   We are on a little trip to celebrate my birthday!

Here's the rewind so far ~

Thursday night we enjoyed dinner and cake with our son and daughter-in-law.  And their two cats!

Kayla made the most scrumptious chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream icing.  It was a fun night and we so enjoyed spending time with Ian and Kayla.

Friday we loaded up and headed out for a little getaway.  Our first stop was Nashville.  We rolled into town just as the sun was setting.

Our home-away-from-home for a few days was the Home2 Suites by Hilton Downtown.  We were a bit nervous about staying in a hotel with covid and knew our trip would be different than when we typically visited Nashville.  Our goal was to do a few things but stay away from crowds.

We had dinner reservations Friday night at Lockeland Table.  I'd heard great things about this establishment and we were delighted with our experience there.  We shared a salad and wood fire pizza. Oh, and a fabulous cocktail!

Saturday morning with masks on we were off to the Johnny Cash museum.  I'm going to be posting a separate post on all our Nashville activities later this week so the summary of the museum will happen then.

We lunched at Blake Shelton's place, Ole Red, where we enjoyed live music and good food.  Then we took a stroll across the pedestrian bridge.

Sunday we traveled on to Chattanooga.  On the way, we took a short detour off the highway to see Rutledge Falls.  So worth the trip off the highway!

The Chattanooga trip is getting its' own blog post too, so I'll save the details for that.  But I will say that we are enjoying the nature around the area and I'm excited to share it with you!

My birthday weekend has been such fun and it's been great to get away.  We have been being very careful, wearing our masks, and staying away from crowds of people.

I'll be back soon to share more details from Nashville and Chattanooga.  Until then, I hope your week is off to a great start!  See you soon.

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - The Bluebird Cafe

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday!  Hope you link up below and share what you are thinking out loud about today.

So, you know when your weekend was so good that you are still thinking it and it's Thursday already?!?  Well, that's me this week.  Last weekend was SOOOO much fun that I just can't stop thinking about it.  Today, specifically, I'm thinking out loud about part of our adventure - getting in The Bluebird Cafe.

Bluebird

This little 90 seat music club opened in 1982.  If you have watched a single episode of the show Nashville, you've heard of the Bluebird before.  I know this because after last weekend I came home and watched my first episode of the series.  That's right, I wanted to go to this tiny little listening room without having seen one minute of the show.  However, my friend Debbie who was with me on the trip is a big fan and getting in was on her bucket list.

Let me start at the beginning.  Getting tickets is no small achievement.  You can try to get reservations online for a given show about a week ahead of time.  For example, we were hoping for the Saturday night early show on October 7.  Reservations were accepted starting Monday, October 2, at 8:00 am Central time.  Debbie and  I were perched at our computers well in advance waiting for the clock to strike 8.  We both got in and we were so excited!!  But then we saw the below message ~
Admission Type
Price
Quantity
SOLD OUT! There will be around 10-12 church pew seats (ALL-AGES) that are first come, first served when doors open. There’s always a possibility of more seats becoming available at the door due to no shows or last-minute cancellations.

SOLD OUT!!  What the  heck!  My time in line was 8:02 and Debbie's was 8:03.  Yes, they sell out just that quick.  But we were determined.  See the little note that says 10-12 church pew seats would be available on a first come, first serve basis?  Well, we were going to do everything in our power to make sure we were sitting on those church pews!

We honestly had no idea what time the line would start forming, so we wanted to be there early.  The show started at 6:30 pm, so we figured we wanted to be in line by 1:30 pm to be assured we would get seats.

When we arrived right around 1:30 pm, no one was in line.  We quickly claimed the number 1 and 2 spots!  We didn't want to get our hopes up too high, but were feeling pretty good about getting in.  It wasn't long after we were there that numbers 3 and 4 showed up.  They were an adorable couple, Josh and Erica, who were visiting Nashville from Canada.  So fun talking to them for hours!

Being prepared is in our nature, so we had lawn chairs, snacks, and drinks to make the wait a bit more comfortable.  Oh, and we also had our spirographs!  Who doesn't love an afternoon of spirographing?!?

Honestly, the time passed quickly and at 5:10 pm we were packing up our area and getting stuff put back in the car.  By this time, the line was quite lengthy and we knew not everyone in line would be getting a seat inside.  A Bluebird employee came out about 5:25 pm and told us the rules:  no cover, $10 minimum food and beverage purchase per person.  No problem - just let us in!

The people who had reservations were ushered in first.  We entered close to 6:30 pm - just  in time for the show - and were taken to our church pew made for two.  This particular night the show was in the round, which meant there were four performers all facing each other in the center of the room.

Each performer took a turn talking about their song and then singing it.  They went around the circle about five times.  While they put on their energetic show, we dined on Caviar of the South (pimento cheese and Ritz crackers) and chicken fingers.  It was a bit challenging to eat holding the food on our laps, but we managed.

Blake Chaffin, Adam James, Kelleigh Bannen and Clint Daniels sang away until around 8:30 pm.  We said goodbye to our new friends from Canada and exited the building.  But wait - the line for the second show that would be starting in just about an hour was not very long.  We immediately got back in line with our new friends from Canada and waited to  see if we could get in the second show.  We got in that one also!!

This go round was a $15 cover with the same $10 per person minimum food and beverage charge.  For show number two, which was also in the round, we had the opportunity to enjoy hearing Annie Mosher, Don Henry, Craig Carothers and Angela Kaset.

The Bluebird Cafe

It was a great night and I'm so glad we can now proudly say we've been in The Bluebird!  Would I wait that long again to get in -- ABSOLUTELY!

Now it's your turn - what are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share ~

Weekending - October 6, 2017

Happy Monday friends!  Did you have a nice weekend?  Mine was a total blast!  My friend, Debbie, and I took a vacation day on Friday to start a weekend of fun.  And fun we had!

We left my driveway early Friday morning and headed to Nashville.  We had a couple things on our to-do list that we really wanted to get accomplished.  One of them was to get chicken at the Loveless Cafe.  The last time we were in Nashville the wait for the restaurant was longer than we had time so we just grabbed a pulled pork sandwich from the Ham and Jam shop.  The sandwich was fantastic, but chicken is what they are famous for so chicken was what we were hoping to get this trip.

It was around 1:00 pm when we parked at Loveless and the wait was only one hour.  They handed us a pager that worked over their entire grounds so we headed to the little out buildings to see what they had for sale.  Just about the time we were finished looking in the shops, the pager buzzed and we hurried over to the restaurant.

When the waitress arrived to take our order, she presented us with a plate full of biscuits.  YUM!

Debbie order the hot (spicy) fried chicken and I ordered the regular.  Our quarter-of-a-chicken plates came with two sides and I chose fried green tomatoes and their famous hashbrown casserole.  Talk about delicious!

After we were thoroughly stuffed, we got back in the car for the 30 minute drive to our hotel.  We had a room at the new 21c Museum Hotel in downtown Nashville and were excited to see it.  The minute we pulled up, the bellman had our suitcases out of the car and was escorting us to the lobby.  I'll be doing a separate blog review on the hotel.  But for now, let me just say it was fabulous!

We freshened up a bit and headed out.  It was a short walk to Broadway and the cornucopia of honky tonks.  The main attraction for us that night was going to be the Ed Sheeran concert, but we had a little time to have a drink and enjoy some live music.  Just walking up and down Broadway is an experience.  Music spills out of every open door and you have your pick of places to enjoy.

Soon it was time to head down the street to the Bridgestone Arena for the concert.  To say we were a bit excited would be an understatement!

James Blunt opened and got the crowd pumped up for the main attraction.  Ed came on and captivated his audience throughout the entire performance.  It never ceases to amaze me how he can come on the stage all by himself, with no band, and play such  a phenomenal concert!  Love that guy!!

After the concert, we journeyed back to our hotel.  One of us may have bought a new pair of cowboy boots along the way.

It had been pre-decided that Saturday morning we would sleep in and take it easy.  We had to get checked out of the hotel by 11 and just made it.  Our goal for the day was to get in The Bluebird.  We had both tried, and failed, to get reservations but we knew they took a small number of first-come, first-serve people.  Before headed to The Bluebird to wait in line, we detoured to the 12 South area for a little shopping and lunch.

Another thing on our to-do list was to visit Draper James.  This little boutique is Reese Witherspoon's creation and absolutely adorable!  The minute you step in the door, you are offered a glass of sweet tea complete with a striped paper straw.

We were both very proud (and felt a little Southern) to carry out the light blue and white shopping bags.

We had just enough time to grab a bite to eat at Burger Up before heading to The Bluebird.  Eric and I had eaten at this cozy little corner place the last time we were in Nashville and I was all too happy to eat there again.  Debbie and I shared the kale salad and Ramsey Pimento Cheese Burger.  The jalapeno bun gave this burger just the right amount of heat.  So good!

You can't really leave the 12 South area without stopping by Sprinkles Cupcake ATM!  We took a salted caramel cupcake to go in case we needed a snack later.

Then it was on to try our luck at getting in The Bluebird.  If you are a fan of the show Nashville, you know exactly the place I'm talking about.  I've never seen a single episode, but Debbie is a big fan and I'm always up for stuff like this.  I'm going to do a separate post on this adventure, but I will share with you now that it was a smashing success!

Reservations are hard to come by, but for each show a small number of people can get in if you wait in line.  We were determined, so we showed up WAAAAYYYY early to wait in the walk up line.

Not only did we get in, we also made new friends from Canada, Josh and Erica.  Stop back by on Wednesday for a full review.

Sunday was fairly uneventful because we were driving back to St. Louis.  I'll leave out the part where my tire was low on air and we had to go to three different places before we found a place the air pump was working.  Oh, and it was POURING rain.

Overall, this was a stellar weekend!  I'm so blessed to have friends in my life that are up for these types of adventures!  Weekends like this are how memories of a lifetime are made.

Check out what others were up to this weekend.
