Thinking Out Loud Thursday - June 18, 2015

Hey, hey -- Happy Thursday!!  Glad you stopped by another edition of Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

X-tremely V

It's been organizing season at my house recently.  If you saw my Weekending post, you know that Kelsey did a fantastic job whipping my craft room back into shape.  (BTW, I'm 4 days in and it's still looking good.)  The next big project is my pantry.  If you don't see me for a few days, it means I could have gotten lost under all the junk in there.  Please come look for me!!

Every time I try to conquer cleaning out the pantry, I run into the same quandary -- how long is the shelf life of this or that.  Most items I keep in the pantry have the date stamped right on the outside someplace so it makes it pretty easy to weed through those items.  Check out some of these food storage shelf lives!  Who knew you could actually will your wheat to your kids and it would still be good.

How long will my food storage last? These dates are way off. Grains contain oil that breaks down. I'd like to know how long they truly last.

And what about when you're cleaning out the frig?  Just how long are those leftovers going to last? When I buy items at the store, how long are they still good?

101 Cooking for Two - Cheat Sheets" Shelf Life of Food

I better get busy cleaning out the pantry while I'm still in the mood.  Oh wait, I think the mood might have already passed.  Hopefully it will come back soon!

  1. I am not sure that I could put something into my body that was 100 years old LOL, but that is definitely an interesting fun fact. I had no idea that it lasted that long.

  2. These are awesome infographics! I am one of those crazy people who cannot keep leftovers over a day or keep things after their sell by dates, but I am definitely going to print these out and keep them for piece of mind. Thank you!

  3. What a great reference tool! And I'm pretty sure I keep my frozen bread more than 3 months (my people still eat it anyway - it's only a little tough...). Thanks for sharing these helpful tips on Shine blog hop - I'm your neighbor!

  4. Interesting charts however with the way my husband eats, nothing lasts too long in our cabinets/fridge, ha!

  5. I truly did not know most of this! I always worry about shelf life of things so I am going to print this off and put it in my cupboard.

  9. I have a hard time keeping my kale fresh for very long. I just don't use that much of it each day so it's hard to use it all before it loses its crispness.

  10. Observing these guidelines is one way I knew I was an actual adult. When I was an undergrad nothing had a hard and fast expiration date or strict rule for refrigeration (cringe)

  11. I'm actually a OCD nut, so I don't hoard a lot of items in my pantry. But this is a good checklist to have.

  12. This is definitely interesting!!!! I buy mostly organic foods and they tends to expire wayyyy faster than most things so I have a habit of tossing things, even if it isn't that bad yet.

  15. Wow! These lists are awesome! I know sometimes I wonder how long I should put certain things in certain places and if the fridge versus the pantry is better. Thanks for sharing these tips!

  16. I'm going to print this and hang inside my pantry. I can't ever remember this stuff. I shouldn't even admit to how long some of my foods have sat.

PS--I tagged you in a post on my blog today. Check it out if you get a chance. =)

  19. I really have to clean out my pantry and I think there are some things in my frig and freezer that really should be deep sixed as well. It is good to know that some things last a lot longer then the date on the package--being single it sometimes takes me forever to finish something!
