Recent Amazon Purchases

The Amazon driver was making stops at our house pretty much on a daily basis in late November and December.  Today on Thinking Out Loud Thursday I'm doing a little reflecting on some of my favorite purchases from those stops.

1     2     3     4     5

This beautiful cookbook was a gift for a friend and I really wish I would have gotten one for myself also.  Here's the description from Amazon ~
A love letter to one of the oldest, most richly varied food cultures of Europe.

Sicily is a frugal peasant land with a simple cuisine, and yet full of ornate glamour and extravagance. Ben Tish unlocks the secrets of Sicily's culture and food within these pages, diving into its diverse tapestry of cultural influences.

Sitting at the heart of the Mediterranean, between east and west, Europe and North Africa, the food of Sicily is full of citrus, almonds and a plethora of spices, mixing harmoniously with the simple indigenous olives, vines and wheat. You'll find the most delicious, fresh seafood on the coast and mouth-watering meat in land; but the two rarely mix.

Packed full of vibrant flavors, this beautiful collection brings the food of Sicily to your table, with recipes ranging from delicious morsels and fritters to big couscous, rice and pasta dishes and an abundance of granitas, ice creams and desserts, all stunningly photographed. Recipes include: smoky artichokes with lemon and garlic, roasted pork belly with fennel and sticky quinces, bitter chocolate torte, and Limoncello semifredo.

Dive in and experience this unique culinary heritage for yourself, bring the sights and sounds and aromas of Sicily to your home.

Road trips can get long and boring, but if you whip out these Road Trip Table Topics you'll have things to talk about for hours!  We gifted this to a friend of ours who just retired and was headed out on a long road trip to celebrate.  I hope they are enjoying them!  Before our next trip out, I want a set for our car.

We gifted Yeti can insulators for our son and daughter-in-law.  I had gotten Eric one earlier in the year and he loved it so much we decided it was gift-worthy.  Summer will be here before we know it and these will be perfect to have around the pool.

Reuseable Ice Pack
Somehow, all of our reuseable ice packs were displaced.  We take them places and accidentally leave them in freezers.  I reloaded our supply with this 4 pack.  They are thin, which makes them perfect for smaller coolers.  The minute I opened the package I wrote our name on them so hopefully, when we leave them, they will find their way back to us.

I'm always on the hunt for something unique to give my dad.  We gifted him this organic mushroom grow kit for Christmas and I'm excited to see how it grows.  Apparently, the mushrooms are ready to eat after only 10 days of growing.  My guess is my dad is going to love watching them grow, but what he'll really love is sharing the experience with his grandkids as they watch the mushrooms develop.  Pretty fun winter project!

Five on Friday - January 7, 2022

Hey, hey - it's Friday!  I am so thankful we have a weekend ahead of us!  The first week back to work is always long and I'm ready for a little break.  I've got a good book on my nightstand and comfy clothes all ready to go.  But first, let me share my five for this week ~

1.  All Creatures Great & Small
Eric and I are so excited that the second season of All Creatures Great and Small starts on Sunday!  This PBS Masterpiece show grabbed our attention last year when season one came out.  Many people we know had read the books as kids.  Neither of us had, but we loved the show.  It's set in the Yorkshire Dales and has the sweetest characters with lots of animals.  Season two is comprised of 6 episodes, plus a bonus Christmas episode.  Add it to your to-be-watched list!

2.  David Bowie's Album Toy
Were you a David Bowie fan?  His album, Toy, was recorded in 2001 and leaked online in 2011.  It's going to be officially released today, posthumously.  "Toy is like a moment in time captured in an amber of joy, fire and energy," said Bowie's long-time collaborator in a statement.  And I don't think they just randomly choose this release date - it's the day before David Bowie would have celebrated his 75th birthday!  I'm looking forward to giving it a listen this weekend.

Danielle Steel is starting 2022 by releasing her latest book.  It hit the stands on Tuesday and here's the summary from Amazon ~
Antonia Adams is the product of a loveless marriage between a beautiful young model and an aristocrat. As a child, she is abandoned in the abyss that yawns between them, blamed by her mother, ignored by her father, and neglected by both. Unprotected and unloved, she learns that the only way to feel safe is to hide from the dangers around her, drawing as little attention as possible to herself, to be “invisible.”

In her isolation, books are her refuge and movies her escape. A day spent being carried away by an unforgettable film in a dark theater is her greatest thrill. Her love of the movies turns into a dream to become a screenwriter, and a summer job at a Hollywood studio. There, a famous British filmmaker notices her, and suddenly she can remain invisible no longer. He wants to put her in a movie and make her a star. It is a dazzling opportunity but a terrifying one, as it strips her of the camouflage that made her feel safe. She is suddenly thrust into the public eye—and even more so when they fall in love.

She will never let go of her true dream of becoming a filmmaker, though, and if she wants to make that leap, she will have to expose herself in ways she never has before. When tragedy strikes, she must decide whether she will remain center stage or become invisible again, where she feels safest. Will she face her demons, or run and hide?

In this extraordinary novel, Danielle Steel tells the story of a woman who must decide how high a price she is willing to pay to pursue her passion—and whether it is possible to stay true to herself while she does.

4.  National Bubble Bath Day
Tomorrow you'll have the perfect excuse to take a nice, long, relaxing bubble bath because it's National Bubble Bath Day!  I rarely take baths, but when I do I love it!  So why am I not taking more bubble baths?  Are you a bath person?    If so, tomorrow's your special day!

5.  Parent memories...

Have a great weekend!  On the chore list for the weekend is to take down our Christmas decorations.  There's not a lot of excitement to get that done because I really love having the trees lit and a fire in the fireplace.  Wish me luck getting the decorations down and put away!

Reflecting on 2021

Before I put 2021 in the rearview mirror, I want to do a little reflecting on things that took place over those 12 months.  It's always fun to look back and remember the good, acknowledge the bad, and plan on what you're moving forward with.  That's what I'm thinking about today on Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Eric and I both started new jobs in 2021.  Eric switched companies and I accepted a new position within my same company.  Both of us are so excited about our new roles and love them!

We all did new things in 2021 due to the pandemic.  I jumped on the sourdough bandwagon and baked many loaves of bread.

At the beginning of the year, we were being very cautious about going out in public.  We worked on puzzles.

We had Zoom game nights with friends...

We even watched the Chiefs play together over Zoom...

In March, Ian (our son) turned 30!

Spring brought us baseball and we were able to attend the Cardinals opening day!

We had helped with one wedding in 2021 and it took place in June.  The couple was so much fun to work with and their wedding was beautiful!

In July we traveled to Disney World and spent a few days there with Ian and Kayla.

July also brought us two special visitors for a week.  Our niece and nephew stayed with us and we had so much fun!

A week after their visit, our niece was crowned princess of my hometown's fair!

Our beautiful daughter-in-law turned 30 in August.

At the end of summer, my friend Linda and I drove to the beach.  Having this view for a week was wonderful!

October was a heavy travel month for me.  I went to Phoenix for a girls' weekend with some of my college sorority sisters.

There was another girls weekend in Kansas City...

And a work trip to Austin, Texas...

We closed out the year strong!  Santa paid us a visit and the kids had a chance to have lengthy conversations with him.

2021 was such a mixed bag.  After our vaccinations, we slowly began to go more places and see more people.  But bring on 2022!  We are ready for more fun and making more memories.  I leave you with this quote I recently saw, "May the tears you cried in 2021 water the seeds you plant in 2022.".

2022 Goals

This time of year, you see a lot of bloggers posting their goals.  To some, this may be inspirational and others, not so much.  Many times, reading others' goals prompts me to remember things I would like to accomplish or achieve.  It ignites energy and motivation that wasn't there until I declared it on the list.  I hope some of my goals do that for you!

It's a New's Years tradition for me to travel to Kansas City and ring in the new year with friends.  When my son was little and I was single, he and I would make the trek across the state, and on the way, we would talk about things we wanted to do in the coming year.  Some years I traveled alone and it's a wonderful time to reflect and plan and dream of what's to come in the next 12 months.  This year I made the trip with Eric, my husband, and we talked about vacations we would like to take and things we'd like to do around the house.

Here are some of the things I'll be focusing on in 2022 ~

Hike to a waterfall in Tennessee
Waterfalls are one of my very favorite things and I'm willing to travel to see them.  Tennessee is a comfortable weekend trip for us and I would love to see a few of their beautiful waterfalls.

Collect enough green dust jacketed books to do this:

Read the Louise Penny Detective Gamache Series
I've heard so many people who have loves these books and I've not cracked a single one open.  Many of them are free to read on Kindle Unlimited.  I'd like to read at least the first one to see if I like it.

Try a New Decluttering Technique
There's not a single drawer or cabinet in our house that couldn't use a little decluttering.  This year I'm trying a new technique.  On Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I'm going to set a timer for 15 minutes and work on one area.  It might be a drawer or shelf, but for 15 minutes it's getting my full attention.  Hopefully, by the time 2022 is over, I'll be able to see some real results!

Be More of This...

Continue My Spiritual Journey
Our church has had a three-year plan to read through the Bible and we are entering our third year.  By the end of the year, I will have read through the entire Bible!  I'm also in a couple Bible study groups and have learned so much from them.  Looking forward to further exploring and understanding the word in 2022!

Hoping we can put the pandemic behind us and all learn to be kinder to each other.  Now let's get busy making 2022 the best year yet!

Five on Friday - December 31, 2021

This will be the last post for 2021!   What a year!  We have high hopes for 2022 and here's hoping the year lives up to our expectations.  To close out 2021 here's Five on Friday ~

1.  The Bachelor
On January 3 we'll get the meet the new Bachelor - Clayton!  I'll be honest, we've set out the last couple of seasons, but we're excited to see how Clayton handles his chore of finding a wife this season.  I've enlisted a group of friends to watch this season and we're hosting a viewing party to kick off the fun!  Can't wait to see what's sure to do the most dramatic season yet!

2. The Comfortable Kitchen
Looking for a new cookbook to kick off the new year? Here's one that promises 105 laid-back, healthy, and wholesome recipes. Amazon summarizes it like this ~
What does comfort mean in The Comfortable Kitchen? For Alex Snodgrass, New York Times bestselling author of The Defined Dish, bringing her family around the table to share a home-cooked meal is a favorite way to show love. Her recipes are designed to bring joy into that display of affection, from your own comfort cooking to your loved ones’ delight at the delicious flavors, to knowing that you’re caring for your family’s nutrition with each bite.

Though many of her meals are fully paleo compliant, or at the very least paleo-ish, there are plenty of other recipes with simple, flexible ingredient swaps for a cleaner meal when desired—perfect for people who are enjoying their “food freedom” stage of their health journey. And for those who have dietary restrictions, Alex clearly marks each recipe as gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, and paleo, as appropriate.

Alex brings back the joy of being in the kitchen for those at all levels of cooking skill and provides food for every occasion, with soups, salads, pasta, vegetarian and non-vegetarian mains, apps, and sides ranging from one-pot meals to not-so-junky junk food--and even cocktails and desserts--with recipes including:
Cajun Chicken and Wild Rice Soup
Green Curry Poached Halibut with Herbs
Texas Style Brisket Tacos
Herby Green Olive Pasta with Feta
Sheet Pan Honey-Sesame Cauliflower
Clayton’s Margarita
7-Ingredient Almond Butter Cookies

With 105 approachable and nutritious recipes for real, busy life, The Comfortable Kitchen is a must-have cookbook for everyone who cares about what they eat and what they make.
We have seen any snow accumulation this year, but we know it's just a matter of time.  A few years ago, my mom got me a windshield protector and it's the best thing ever!  I have to park outside at work and it's such a pain when it snows or sleets during the day when I'm inside working.  This cover makes it so easy to clean your windows!  You literally have to just pull it off and the window underneath is perfectly clear.  Plan ahead and get yours now!

Looking for a new game to play? Try Roll for It!  It's super easy to learn.  Roll the dice, match them to cards on the table, and win points.  It's a game of chance and quick decisions.  Two to four players ages 8 plus can play.  Great for playing during the long winter nights we have ahead.

5.  I'm on the wrong planet...

Have a safe and fun-filled New Year's Eve!  We are spending the evening with friends playing games and eating fabulous food.  See you in 2022!
