Weekending - January 17, 2020

Weekends typically go by way too fast and this one was no exception!  Here's the recap ~

Friday I managed to slip out of work a bit early due to inclement predicted weather.  I wish I could say that I made good use of my time when I got home, but the truth is I sat in bed, did some work and watched television all night long.  And it was pretty glorious!  Eric even brought me dinner in bed.

Saturday morning I rose early and finished getting ready for my friend Linda's visit.  She had decided to postpone her arrival until Saturday due to the above-mentioned weather.  Soon after she arrived, we were off to a cooking class at one of our favorite stores, Fezziwigs

The title of the class was perfect for the blistery cold day - Winter Soups and Hearty Salads.

We watched as the instructor cooked, roasted and tossed together two soups and two salads.  They were all equally delicious and I can't wait to make them at home.

When the class was over, we did a little retail therapy before going home to get ready for dinner.  We were meeting up with a dear friend of ours and her daughter, Sharyn and Audrey.  Sharyn and I have been friends since the first grade and we all became buddies when our schools united in the sixth grade.  That's a lot of years!  It was wonderful catching up and getting to spend some time together.

We were very excited about watching the Kansas City Chiefs play on Sunday.  They are Linda's home town team and who doesn't love Mahomes!  I have lots of Facebook friends who live in and around the Kansas City area and it was such fun last week seeing their pictures of their town being painted red.  You better believe we will be glued in front of the television for the Superbowl cheering for them to win it all!

Besides the fact that watching football with others is a blast, I love having tons of food to munch on.  We have so many leftovers I don't think I'll be cooking this week at all!  One of the things I made for the game was a coconut cream pie.  I'll be sharing the recipe for this mound of deliciousness later this week.

We have a busy week ahead, full of fun things.  I have to admit, I love having things to do on the calendar!  I hope whatever is on your calendar this week is making you happy!

Five on Friday - January 17, 2020

We have made it to Friday!  I was beginning to think this week had no end!  Today might be a fitting end to an already crazy week because freezing rain is predicted to begin this morning.  Lord, let me just get through today!  Amen.

Hope you enjoy my five for today!

1.  National Hot Buttered Rum Day
How fitting is this - National Hot Buttered Rum Day on a day that's supposed to be so gross outside that all you want to do is sit by the fire and drink.  Need a recipe?  It sounds pretty easy:

1 1/3 oz dark rum (such as Myers)
1 small slice of butter
1 teaspoon brown sugar
cinnamon
nutmeg
Vanilla
boiling water

Mix the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla essence in the glass until it’s creamy. Pour in the rum and the boiling water over a teaspoon and mix well.

2.  Dolittle
Opening today is Robert Downey Jr. starring in Dolittle.  I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about seeing this one.  Maybe if I had kids to go with me I would feel differently.  I know my mind will keep wondering when Dolittle will turn into Iron Man.  Anyone in your household excited about this one?  Here's the synopsis from Fandango.
After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

3.  Kansas City Chiefs
I'm so excited to watch the Chiefs game on Sunday!  We're having a couple people over to watch with us and that makes it even more fun.  There are so many fun things these days to gift sports fans.  One of my favorites was these lights you can attach to your car door and they project the Chiefs logo on the ground.  Cool, right!  Check them out HERE.

4.  Rare
Selena Gomez's new music on her cd Rare is released today!  To mark the occasion, Selena even got the word "Rare" tattooed on her neck.  Good thing it wasn't titled something really long!  In recent interviews, she's talked about how this was a personal project, saying "It's the most honest music I've ever made and I can't wait for you to hear my heart.".  Well, the wait is over!  Grab your copy HERE today.

Enjoy the weekend!  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my plans don't get canceled because of the predicted weather.  A friend is spending the weekend with me and we're scheduled to go to a cooking class tomorrow and out to eat with some other friends.  It should be a fun time!  Pop back in next week to see how it went.

Best Picture Goes To...

Hello there! Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday. I'm doing a little thinking about the 2020 Oscar nominations today.

On Monday morning, bright and early, the Academy announced the nominees.  Nine motion pictures are vying for the title of Best Picture.

Every year, I try to see all the movies up for the title of Best Picture.  This year there are nine.  I've seen five, have no desire to see one, never had heard of two and can't wait to see one.  Guess which two I've never heard of - JoJo Rabbit and Parasite.  Have you seen them?

I might be the only person left on the planet who hasn't seen Joker.  I might see it only because it's nominated.  From everything I've heard, it's just not a movie that you leave feeling good.

Which movie are you placing your bet on for the win?  I'll let you know my thoughts as soon as I've seen them all, which hopefully is before the Oscars air on Sunday, February 9.

Now it's your turn.  What are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share.

    Accessorize Your Wellies!

Last weekend we got a massive amount of rain followed by a dusting of snow.  The only reason I was slightly happy there was precipitation happening outside was the fact that I could wear my wellies while running my errands!

    '

Soon after I had made my investment in a pair of Hunter boots, my daughter-in-law and son (I know it was more my daughter-in-law's idea so thanks Kayla!) gifted me a couple pairs of Hunter Boot Socks.  One of the best gifts ever!  It's fun being able to put a layer of personalization to the boots.

Another bonus to the socks is their added warmth.  Below that turn-down cuff is a boot made of fleece that will keep your toes warm even on the blisteriest of winter days.  They slip right into the boot and are oh so comfortable.

Everyone could use a pair (or seven) to add to their boots!  I'm definitely thinking about adding these fur toppers to my collection.

Or these adorable pink and black leopard print ones!

Let's face it - they are all adorable!  Whatever pair you slip under your boots is sure to add a little piazza to your pair.

    Five on Friday - January 10, 2020

Happy Friday!  This has been a rather long week, as the first full week of work usually is after being on holiday for a while.  And to make it even richer, I picked up a cold from somewhere.  Needless to say, I'm pretty darn excited that after I make it through today I'll be off work for two glorious days!

Let's get on with my five for today ~

    1.  National Cut Your Energy Costs Day
One thing I hate spending money on is utilities.  Today is a day to think about ways to cut your energy costs.  Eric and I keep our house pretty cool in the winter when we're not home.  Then, thanks to our programmable Sensi thermostat, kick it up when we're on our way home.  What are some ways you've found effective at cutting your energy costs?  Linked below are a few of our favorite items to help with cutting your energy costs.

    2.  1917
This film has already made a splash in the movie world by capturing a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture.  We've wanted to see it since the first time we saw the previews.  1917 opens today and we'll be seeing it today!  Here's the synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes:
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic's George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones' Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers--Blake's own brother among them.

    3.  Cheetos Cheddar and Flamin Hot Popcorn
I might be a little too excited about Cheetos new products - Cheddar and Flamin Hot Popcorn!  Keep your eyes peeled around the 13th for bags of this new popcorn to be available for you to take home and enjoy.  Don't forget to grab a pack of napkins - you'll need them for that Cheetos dust.

    4.  Exfoliating Glove
Eric and I each have one of these exfoliating gloves to use in the shower and they are amazing!  The silicone shower scrubber gently exfoliates while cleaning.  It's like getting a little massage every time you use it.  Pair it with the shower gels that are on clearance right now at Bath & Body and you can't go wrong!

    5.  Bummer...
Image may contain: possible text that says 'I THOUGHT I WAS LOSING WEIGHT BUT IT TURNED OUT MY SWEATPANTS CAME JN-TIED...DAMN CRAFTYMORNING.COM'

Have a wonderful weekend!  I'm going to stay in bed drinking hot tea until this cold subsides.  Hopefully, I'll feel like getting up and being productive by tomorrow morning.  I want to drag out Valentine's decorations and assess what we have and what we might need.  See you next week!
