Five on Friday - November 13, 2020

Hope you're not superstitious because today is Friday the 13th!  To be honest, I've always had pretty good luck on Friday the 13ths so I'm hoping some good fortune will come my way today.

I'm glad you popped in to see my Five on Friday today.  Here's what I have for you~

1.  The Crown
Back for season four, Netflix's The Crown kicks off on Sunday.  I'm ready for it!  This season brings in the sagas of Princess Diana and Prince Charles.  Season four will cover the era where my interest in the Royal Family began to ramp up.  And I'm not sure I will ever get enough of the People's Princess.  Looking forward to watching all the drama play out!

Tuesday Barack Obama's newest book, A Promised Land, will be released.  This is volume one of an expected two-volume set.  Here's the summary from Amazon ~
A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making—from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy

In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency—a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office.

Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune’s Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective—the story of one man’s bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of “hope and change,” and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.

This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama’s conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Have you been inside a Big Lots lately?  You might want to stop by because they have the most adorable cast iron skillet cookie kits!  We picked up a couple and I was thinking they would be perfect for a secret Santa gift, but now I'm thinking we should just keep them for ourselves because they are so darn cute.  For $6 each, they would make great stocking stuffers, neighbor gifts, or just a fun activity to do with the kiddos.  They have several varieties so you're sure to find your favorite flavor.

4.  Rakuten

5.  Current diet.....

Eric and I are taking a few days off and are looking forward to a covid friendly trip.  We'll be doing some hiking and will be back on Monday to tell you all about it.  Hope you have a great weekend and see you back here next week!

  1. You doll!! Thanks for the giggle. Along comes Covid to mess up our well intentioned dieting. I just have eaten myself into a stupor over here.

Glad you are heading out for a little getaway. We need one desperately. DESPERATELY. But I am afraid there is nowhere within weekend getaway driving distance that I would feel safe going to. Maybe we will sleep in the guest room tonight?

Love love love those cookie skillets. My daughters would eat them up. They used to request big birthday cookies rather than cakes. Hope our Big Lots has them and can open long enough for me to go pick some up.

  2. Those cookie kits look great! I see one that each of my boys would like. I made some serious money on Rakutan the other day as they were offering 11% back on the 11th!

  3. Have a great trip! Now to find a big lots before Tuesday!;)
