Let's Make Kettlecorn

Every now and then, Eric and I will be settling in to watch a movie or enjoy a game on television and crave something a little bit sweet and a little bit salty.  In moments like this, I whip up a batch of kettlecorn!

This recipe literally only takes a couple minutes to complete and I typically have all the ingredients on hand.  You can pull this off during a commercial break!

Here's What You Need
1/2 cup Popcorn Kernels
3 tablespoons Cooking Oil
1/4 cup Sugar
Salt

Here's What You Do
Put your Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker on the stove and turn on the heat.  I usually start on high and then reduce the heat to medium after the kernels begin popping.

Pour in the oil, kernels, and sugar.  Shut the lid and wait for the popping to begin.  As soon as you hear the first kernel burst, give the handle a turn and keep slowly turning while the rest of the kernels spring open.  (This is also when you turn the heat from high to medium.)

When the popping stops, remove from heat and pour into a bowl.  Sprinkle with salt.  Enjoy!

Five on Friday - April 5, 2019

Happy Friday!  It's a happy, happy day in St. Louis today because it's the home opener for our beloved Cardinals.  Just love hearing the crack of the bat on opening day!  Before that excitement gets underway, here's my five for today ~

1.  Amidst the Chaos
Are you a Sara Bareilles fan?  If so, today is a happy day for you!  Sara's new CD, Amidst the Chaos, drops today.  Ever since we saw the musical Waitress, my love for her has grown and I can't wait to hear this 12 song collection.  Want a copy for yourself?  Click HERE to check it out.  Oh - and don't forget to check her out on Saturday Night Live this week.

2.  Easter Egg Oreos
The folks over at the Oreo factory have been working overtime.  They just got through their special Valentines cookies and they are now giving us a special, limited edition, egg shaped cookie for Easter.  I'm thinking these oval shape will make the dunking in milk that much easier.  Look for them in Walmart and Target stores.

3.  Magnetic Bookmarks
Speaking of Easter, are you looking for some things to put in those baskets?  Check out these magnetic bookmarks!  The whole set is a little less than $10.  Give them all to one lucky fellow or bust up the set and spread the joy.  Either way, these things are winners!  Click HERE to grab a set before they are gone.
I had heard so many things about this novel and it finally floated to the top of my read list.  Oh.My.Goodness -- it's so good!  Loved the story and the beautiful way it was told.  Here's they synopsis from Amazon ~
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.
Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.
If you don't have this one loaded on your Kindle or sitting on your nightstand, buy it immediately.  I don't think you'll be sorry!  Click HERE to get your hands on a copy.

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - April 4, 2019

Hey there friends - welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday.  Each week I share something I'm doing a little thinking about and hope, if you're a blogger, you'll link up below and share what's on your mind today.

Spring happened on the calendar a few weeks ago, but here in St. Louis the thermometer is just now catching up.  We had several evening since the spring began on March 20 that it got down right cold at night.  Well, the temperature are starting to warm up and the trees are starting to show signs of new life.  The days are slowly getting longer and I can feel myself coming out of hibernation.  All this calls for setting some spring goals!

Spring is technically from March 20 until the first day of summer, which in 2019 will be June 21.  Basically 90 days of watching the earth come back to life after the winter months.  Here are some things I'm hoping we accomplish between now and the summer solstice ~

Plant the Garden
Now, I'm using the term "garden" pretty loosely.  We have a little postage stamp size plot of land we plant a few tomato plants in each year and several herbs.  Regardless of the size, it just makes me feel good to be growing something in the back yard.

Plan and Book Our Vacation
Eric and I have talked about going to Ireland this year.  We just need to pull the plug and make it happen.  We've never been there before.  Have you?  Would love to hear some recommendations!

Clean My Craft Room
Guys - this will be no small fete.  The very few people who I have allowed to see my craft room can attest to the messiness of the situation.  I have literally layers of projects in there and honestly, it's overwhelming to me to step inside this room.  But I'm going to tackle the chaos before the clock strikes midnight on the last day of spring!  Seriously, if I don't have it cleaned up by then I'm going to put everything in trash bags, throw them away and just start over.  I want that room to be what it once was - a place I could let out my creativeness.  Wish me luck.

Inquire about Joining a Small Group at Church
You might remember when I blogged about our 2019 goals (HERE), one of the items was to find a new church.  We have been going to a new church since the first of the year and really enjoy it.  the thing is, we really haven't met any new people.  My next step is to try to find a small group within the church for us to join.  Spring seems like a good time to make that happen.

Grow Grass
I have no idea what happened to our yard, but last fall weeds completely took it over.  We (Eric) put down weed killer and we were left with so many bare spots!  Basically, our yard looks like crap right now.  We (again Eric) has been slowly getting seed down and trying to fill in the bare spots, but it's going to take a lot more work.  I'm actually going to try to help him and together hopefully we'll have a lush yard by the time summer gets here.

Blog a Couple Fashion Posts
I bought this gorgeous full length mirror in hopes of being able to do a few fashion posts.  Have I done it?  No!  So I'm adding this to my goals in hopes that will be the nudge I need to make it happen.  I love seeing others fashion finds and want to start showing you some of my best finds.  Stay tuned!

So there you have it - my 2019 Spring Goals.  What are some things that you're hoping to get accomplished this spring?

Now it's your turn.  What are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!

Book Review: And Then There Were None

Last week I did something a little out of my comfort zone.  I had been wanting to join a new book club for a while and, after a bit of research, I found one at a nearby library.  They had posted their book selection was an Agatha Christie book and I got busy reading.

And Then There Were None cover

One of the reasons I love book clubs is because many times the reading selection is something I wouldn't normally pick up to read.  This was one of those times.  The title chosen for March was Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.  Even though Agatha Christie is the most widely published author of all time, I hadn't read a single one of her books.

If you were a fan of the PBS Great American Read List, this book came in at number 19.  They offer this summary of the book ~
Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to an isolated mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die...
After a brief introduction to each individual invited to the island, the book shares a poem found in each of the guest rooms ~
Ten little Soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little Soldier boys traveling in Devon;
One said he’d stay there and then there were seven.
Seven little Soldier boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.
Six little Soldier boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Soldier boys going in for law;
One got into Chancery and then there were four.
Four little Soldier boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little Soldier boys walking in the zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two little Soldier boys playing with a gun;
One shot the other and then there was One.
One little Soldier boy left all alone;
He went out and hanged himself and then there were none.
Following the poem, guest by guest was found dead.  Each time I thought I had the mystery murdered figured out, that character died!  The book kept me guessing with every page turned.  Don't worry if you can't figure it out - they walk you through each murder at the very end.

It's fun finding words in books that I haven't heard in a while or used.  Here's some I found interesting in this piece of work ~

Malevolently - having or showing a wish to do evil to others
Luxuriated - enjoys oneself in a luxurious way; take self-indulgent delight
Lassitude - a state of physical or mental weariness; lack of energy

Have you read And Then There Were None?  Is there another Agatha Christie book you like more than this one?  I like this one enough I can see myself revisiting it again and enjoying it just as much!

Oh, and as far as the book club goes - I truly enjoyed it and am planning on going back.  The title we're reading for April is The Librarian of Auschwitz.
