Five on Friday - August 7, 2020

Hello Friday!  I'm taking a vacation day today, so the weekend is beginning a little earlier than normal.  The weather is supposed to be gorgeous today and I can't wait to spend some time outside!  Before I get out the door, here's my five for this week ~

1.  Made in Italy
A new movie comes out today and it looks like one I'll love!  Eric and I are really missing going to see movies in theaters.  It was a favorite thing for both of us and we've been struggling a bit without it.  This week we are going to turn down the lights and kick back on the couch with a big tub of popcorn to watch Liam Neeson's new movie Made In Italy.  Neeson plays alongside his real-life son Michael Richardson.  It released to theaters (if you can find a theater open) and streaming.  Here's the synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes ~

Made In Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Liam Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Micheál Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair.... Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert's comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Lindsay Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. For Jack, the state of the house seems to mirror his search for memories of happier times with his mother. 2.  Member's Mark Sangria
We did a small social distanced happy hour on my friend's patio this week and she served Member's Mark (Sam's) Sangria.  It was to die for!  She added a little fruit and it was a refreshing cocktail.  I'm adding it to my Sam's list so we can have a bottle at home to enjoy.  If you're looking for a new cocktail, check out this one.  It's a winner!



3.  Perseid Meteor Shower
Get outside over the next week and gaze into the skies for a glimpse of the Perseid Meteor shower.  This coming week should be the peak for the Northern Hemisphere and is considered the best meteor shower of the year.  Fifty to a hundred meteors per hour should be shooting across the sky. Pre-dawn hours are the best, but it's possible to view meteors from this shower as early as 10 pm.  Go HERE to get specific information for the best viewing in your area.



4.  What's Your Enneatype?

Happy Friday!  I'm not sure where this week has gone.  This month is whizzing by far too fast!  Before today zips past us, here's my five on Friday ~

1.  The Wife
This movie opens today, but unfortunately I don't think it's showing at any theaters near us.  I'll be on the lookout for it though because it looks fantastic.  Here's how Fandango sums it up:

4.  Maple Bacon Breakfast Seasoning

Eric brought it to my attention this week that McCormick has a whole new line of breakfast seasonings.  The one that caught my eye was the maple bacon one.  I mean, doesn't everything taste better with a little bacon flavor in it?!?  So this stuff can be sprinkled on cooked eggs or hash browns, mixed into cream cheese or butter, or used to season omelets or frittatas.  I will definitely be trying it!  If Maple Bacon isn't your cup of tea, they also have Apple Cinnamon, Strawberries & Cream, Brown Sugar Vanilla, Bell Pepper Salsa and Garden Herb.  Wow McCormick - you have really outdone yourself!

Happy Friday!  Hope you had a wonderful 4th holiday and are ready for the weekend.  We had a hot holiday here in St. Louis, but we made the best of it.  Enjoy the five for today ~

1.  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
This is one of my all-time favorite books and it's now being made into a movie!  It will begin streaming on Netflix on August 10 and has a great cast (many from Downton Abbey).  I thought I'd mention this to you now in case you wanted to read it before the movie hit the airways.  You can purchase the book HERE.  Amazon sums up the book this way ~

2.  Nashville Hot Chicken Flavored Pringles

The temperatures are hot this summer and Pringles is bringing their own heat these days with their new flavor:  Nashville Hot Chicken.  For a limited time only Pringles is partnering with Dollar General to bring us this intriguing chip.  Wonder how hot they really are?  I might have to venture to a Dollar General to pick up a can and check it out for myself.  

3.  National Fried Chicken Day
Speaking of chicken, today is National Fried Chicken Day!  Fried Chicken is one of my favorite things. Word has it that Scottish immigrants brought their tradition of deep-frying chicken in fat to the southern United States.  Thank you Scottish immigrants! 



4.  Whitney
Whitney, the movie, opens today and I'm intrigued to see it.  I've so often wondered how someone who had so many positives going for them could let it completely fall apart.  Maybe this movie will shed some light on when the wheels completely fell off.  Here's the synopsis from Fandango:

It's Friday!!  Who else out there is ready for a weekend?!?  I know I sure am.  I'm also ready to share my five with you today, so with no further ado ~

1.  Cody
You might remember last fall I mentioned my dear friend's son, Cody, was involved in a car accident that left him with very serious injuries to his head and body.  Well, after 8 long, silent months, Cody is speaking!  (Insert praise hands here!)  This great news actually began on Mother's Day and his speech has continued to improve ever since.  The road to full recovery is still long, but this is such a huge step forward!  If you would like to read Cody's story, check out his GoFundMe page HERE.  And please continue to keep Cody and his family in your prayers.  Cody's a fighter and I have no doubt that this is just the beginning of his miraculous recovery!



2.  Ocean's 8
Can't wait to see this movie that opens today!  So many fabulous female stars came together in this film - Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson.  Here's how Rotten Tomatoes describes it, "Upon her release from prison, Debbie, the estranged sister of legendary conman Danny Ocean, puts together a team of unstoppable crooks to pull of the heist of the century. 3.  National Best Friend Day
Hip, hip, hooray for best friends!  And today's the day to celebrate them!  We all have moments when we just need best friends to lean on.  Let today be the day you tell them how much you appreciate and love them in your life.  To all my friends -- I honestly don't know what I would do without you!  Thanks for being there for me.

4.  Saddleback Carriers
Have you guys seen the Saddleback Carriers?  These things are game chargers for parents with small children!  If you've ever tried to carry a kid on your shoulders for more than a nanosecond, you know what I'm talking about.  Saddleback Carriers have a little seat for the child to sit in AND straps that go around their legs to make them more secure, allowing you to be hand-free!  One version comes with a backpack and the other is just the carrier.   Looks like a pretty cool contraption to me!

It's Friday!!  This week seemed to fly by for me.  How about you?  Still not spring weather around here, but next week looks promising.  Hopefully, my five today will warm you up ~

1.  National Park Week
I got an email this week from the National Park Foundation that I thought was well worth sharing.  Here's what it said, "This Saturday, April 21, all national park sites that normally charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone.  That’s right, all 84 million acres of historic places, cultural treasures, and the world’s most spectacular scenery will be open for free!"  How cool is that?!?  Looking for a park to visit?  Click HERE to find a beautiful park near you.

2. New Flavors of M&M's

Have you heard - M&M's have three new flavors: Crunchy Raspberry, Crunchy Espresso, and Crunchy Mint.  They are hoping you try all three and vote for your favorite by May 25th.  The winning flavor will be launched in August.  If you happen to be at the Color Run this Saturday in St. Louis, they will have a booth set up for your tasting pleasure.  Visit M&M's website to vote for your favorite.

3.  I Feel Pretty

4.  Giada's Italy: My Recipes for La Dolce Vita

At the end of March, Giada De Laurentiis released her newest cookbook and it is definitely on my wish list.  The photos are shot on location around her native Rome.  We recently booked our vacation to Rome for this fall and I want to see all the places she talks about in her cookbook!  Am I the only crazy person that reads a cookbook like a good novel?  With the help of this cookbook, I'm sure I'll be whipping up her Italy dishes in no time.  Would someone you know like a copy?  Click HERE to purchase.

5.  Let's pretend.....

Did someone say weekend?!?  I'm ready over here!  Fun stuff is on the agenda starting immediately at the end of my workday today, so I'm a tad bit excited to get through my work and start the merriment.

Before I do, here's my five for this week ~

1.  National Mammography Day
Did you get a mammogram this year?  There are different ages suggested to start getting mammograms, but the general rule is women around the age of 40 should start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms.  Today being National Mammography Day is an excellent reminder to make that appointment if you haven't yet.  Hey, it could save your life.  Just do it.

2. Only the Brave
We've seen the previews for this movie a couple of times in the theaters and each time Eric and I look at each other and say, "I want to see that one.".  Here's the summary from Rotten Tomatoes, "All men are created equal... then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it--they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire."  Is it on your list to see?

3.  Movie Pass

Speaking of movies, have you heard of MoviePass? Any theater, any day, any movie. Basically, it's a card that allows you to see a movie a day at one of the over 4,000 theaters for the low monthly charge of $10 ($9.99 to be exact). I applied for my card a few weeks ago and it came in the mail last week. We used it on Saturday when we saw Victoria and Abdul and it worked like a charm! You have to be close to the theater and select your movie from the MoviePass app on your phone. Take your card in the theater and use it to pay for your ticket. That's it -- pretty simple!



4. LOC One & Done Shadow Stick
One of the MANY things I love about a girls weekend is all the girl chatter that happens.  On my recent trip to Nashville with Debbie, I noticed her amazing eye shadow.  She shared it was LOC One & Done and she got it from Birchbox.  (If you're not a member of Birchbox, I would highly recommend popping in HERE and signing up.)  So when I got home, I ordered Debbie's color, Impress Me, and Out of Your Shell just because it was so pretty.  All the colors are beautiful! Let me tell ya, I've been wearing it every day since it arrived and am LOVING it!  This stuff smoothly glides on and is still creaseless when I get home after work.  Love it!

5.  So me.......

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. I'm headed to a Scandal viewing party immediately after work tonight and I'm dying to see what Olivia Pope is up to.  Tomorrow Kayla and I are going to a Harry Potter tea. We made reservations months ago so we're excited that the date is finally here.  Then on Sunday we're going to Hermann for some wine tasting.  Should be an excellent weekend!  Hope you pop back in on Monday to get the recap!

Weekending - September 15, 2017

This blog post looks a lot different than I thought it would.  Friday morning I was downright giddy about the epic weekend we had in store!  My friend Linda was coming in from Kansas City and we were headed to the U2 concert on Saturday night.  Then on Sunday night Eric and I were joining our friends Larry and Debbie for the Ed Sheehan concert.  Neither of these concerts happened.

You see, Friday morning the verdict from the Anthony Lamar Smith case was delivered and found the police officer innocent of the murder charges brought against him.  Protesting ensued, followed by agitators reeking havoc on our city causing the cancellation of many events happening in St. Louis this weekend.  It's all so sad.

As much as I love living in a country where we can feel free to express our opinions openly by protesting, I'm equally embarrassed by the individuals who take it way too far and destroy personal property and businesses.  Hence, the term "agitators" has been added to our vocabulary over the weekend.

Let me get off my soapbox and tell you what I did do this weekend ~

My friend Carol popped in my house this week and decorated it for Fall.  I had been slow to jump on the fact that Summer was winding down and Carol saved the day by working her magic at my house. Her work is always exquisite and now I'm totally embracing Fall!

Friday night Linda rolled into town just in time for us go to dinner.  We picked someplace close to my house.  Peel was our choice and it was delicious!  We enjoyed an appetizer, salad, wings and pizza before topping it off with ice cream from Dairy Queen and calling it a night.

We were up before the sun on Saturday with a single purpose on our minds - the Joya Popup Sale in the Central West End!  The first 25 people in line were going to be rewarded with a free goody bag and we were not going to miss out on that action.  You are looking at numbers 1, 2, and 3 in line right here.

After our retail therapy (and getting some GREAT deals), we headed to the theater to see Home Again with Reese Witherspoon.  Now, by this time we had learned that U2 was cancelled so my view on the movie might be reflected in my review, but all three of us agreed that this movie never really took off.  It's a cute little film that I would rate 3.5 out of 5.  You can definitely wait to see this after it comes out on video.  When you truly have nothing else to do.

Ian met us for lunch at Club Taco, where we could drown our sorrows about the concert.  But in reality, there wasn't enough alcohol in St. Louis to take away the sting of us not seeing U2!  Thanks, Club Taco, for at least having great margaritas.  Linda went with mango and I stuck with my favorite watermelon basil.

We parted ways with Ian and Kayla and decided we needed some more retail therapy.  So to the outlet malls we went!  We shopped for a bit and each now have more pairs of shoes to load into our closets.  Thank goodness we had to leave to pick up my friends Sherri and John from the airport or the shopping frenzy could have gotten ugly!

Since we were supposed to be listening to live music on Saturday night, we thought it only appropriate to still so do.  There's a winery in Belleville (The Weingarten) that had live music so we hung out there for a bit.  

Linda headed back to KC around noon on Sunday and we left the house around the same time.  My nephew, Liam, was celebrating his 2nd birthday on Sunday and we didn't want to miss his Paw Prints birthday party!

Seeing Liam and my other nephews and niece always makes things right in the world and puts a smile on my face.

The weekend was capped off with a little craft project.  A friend of mine from work said the words I love to hear - Can you please help me with something? and of course the answer was YES!!  She had done all the cutting, but needed some help putting cupcake toppers together for her daughter's 1st birthday party.  I  think they turned out pretty darn cute.

As disappointed as I was about my weekend plans totally changing, I'm even more sad for the innocent store owners who are having to replace their windows and remove the graffiti left behind by the agitators.  Please say a little prayer for them that this behavior stops and our city can recover.

Happy Friday!  I'm downright giddy to get this weekend started!  We have girls weekend in Kansas City and I can't wait to hit the town with my friends.  Before I get on the road, let me share my five for this week ~

1.  National Junk Food Day
It's one of my favorite days - National Junk Food Day!  Give me some salty snacks and I am one happy camper.  Ahhhh, junk food - you know, the stuff that is high in fats, sugars, salt and calories and contain very little nutritional value. I might grab some good ole' junk food to snack on for my drive to KC today.  What's your junk food guilty pleasure?  #NationalJunkFoodDay

3.  Luggage Bag Bungees

4.  Dunkirk
Dunkirk opens today and it's definitely on my list of movies I want to see.  Here is Movie Insiders summary, "Miraculous evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 27- June 04, 1940, during Battle of France in Word War II."  This fact-based story is getting rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

5.  Party animal.....
