Dresser Makeover

This week I completed a project that was years in the making.  Since I was a baby, the same small dresser has followed me around wherever I go.  It was in my bedroom growing up, my apartment in college, the apartments we lived in when newly married, my first house and now in our current home.  Fifty-six years of housing my belongings.

Since living in a house, the dresser has been located in the master closet.  I open the drawers every morning to grab out my underwear and socks for the day.  The bottom drawer holds treasured letters from friends and old jewelry.

For years I've wanted to paint it, but the project never bubbled to the top of my to-do list.  When I started working on our closet a few weeks ago, that changed.   And this is how the project turned out ~

One of the things that always deterred me from starting the dresser redo was I thought I'd have to strip the varnish off the wood or, at a minimum, sand the whole thing.  I started reading about Heirloom Traditions All-In-One Paint that promised no stripping or sanding.  Sounded like I no longer had an excuse!  The paint was ordered and the project began!

Before starting any good project, I always fall down the rabbit hole of checking out every similar project on Pinterest.  Just painting the dresser was not going to be enough to make me happy!  After a lot of searching on Amazon, I ordered a rub-on for the front, new pulls, and liners for the drawers.

The Heirloom Traditions paint was a winner!  I washed the dresser down with soap and water, then applied the paint with a foam roller.  It went on smooth and easy.  Three coats were applied.  For this dresser, I ordered a pint and used about two-thirds of the can.  Heirlooms Traditions has discount codes everywhere, so do a quick Google search to get their current code.  They also have several application YouTube videos.  Bottom line:  the painting was a breeze.

Next came the rub-on.  After letting the paint cure for 48 hours, I cut the rub-on into the sections needed for the drawers and held them in place with painter's tape.  The rub-on came with the tool needed for the application.  This was so, so easy!  I had done rub-ons before on walls, but this was so nice because I wasn't applying it over my head.

The words are from Victor Hugo and mean "Life is a flower in which love is the honey".  True that!

Next came the new drawer pulls.  I'd had my eye on these crystal ones for quite a while and had been trying to figure out where I could use them.

Next came the outside of the drawers.  For this, I used wrapping paper.  I cut the wrapping paper a bit larger than the size of the drawer, sprayed adhesive on the paper, and attached it.  I used a brayer to rub out all the bubbles.  Then used an Exacto knife to cut off the excess paper.  This little extra touch is going to make me smile every time I open the drawers.

Drawer liners have long been one of my favorite things.  The drawers are now neatly lined with fresh linen scented beauties!

To finish off the drawers, I added dividers.  These help keep my items neatly in place and makes it so easy to find what you're looking for.  My tights are separated from my pantyhose, my underwear from my camis.

Overall, I love the way it turned out!  As a matter of fact, I'm kind of sad it's going back in the closet for no one to see but me.  But it will give me a sense of accomplishment every time I look at it!

Thinking Out Loud Thursday - September 13, 2018

Well hello Thursday!  And welcome to Thinking Out Loud.  This week has truly been a blur for me.  From the moment the wheels of the plane hit the ground from our vacation in Italy, I've been entrenched in work and wedding preparations.  Not that I'm complaining because I sincerely love both things, but come next Monday I might just melt into a puddle and need a few days to recover!

A fun little side hobby of mine is helping brides and grooms make their wedding dreams come true.  I've been working with the most lovely couple - Dayna and Aaron - for several months and their big day is this Sunday!  Things are coming together so beautifully and today I'm thinking out loud about the welcome bag their hotel guests will be receiving.

Who doesn't love a little surprise when you check in a hotel?  It sends a heartfelt message to the guests that the bride and groom appreciate them coming to share in the celebration of their wedding.

Let me share what Dayna and Aaron's guests will be receiving ~

Welcome Letter
If you're anything like me, half the time I forgot the invitation at home and then have to cross my fingers that I've remembered the wedding time correctly.  With the welcome letter, all the important details are outlined and you won't be walking in the wedding when it's half over because you didn't exactly remember the correct start time.

Door Hangar
Don't want to be disturbed the morning after the wedding?  Just hang the personalized door hangar on the door to let everyone know how much fun you had the night before!

Personalized Water Bottles
A couple extra water bottles are always great to have around.  If you don't drink them in the hotel, they can be used when you hit the road for your journey back home.

Oops - For Life's Little Emergencies
Contents include a Shout Wipe, bandages, individual Wet Wipe packet, alcohol wipes, Tylenol and a pack of tissues.  I'd throw those tissues straight in my purse because weddings always make me cry!

Snacks
Just in case the munchies strike, peek in the bag for some snacks!  In the case of Dayna and Aaron, their guests will be getting pretzels, cookies, popcorn, gum and laffy taffy.

Special shout out to Heather at The Papered Wedding.  I was running short on time and purchased a few of her printable items on Etsy to complete the look for these bags.  She was very responsive in answering questions and I received the files super fast.  If you're looking for a quick design to print, check out her Etsy shop.

Now I need to get busy thinking about the rest of the wedding details.  Sunday will be here before I know it.  Thank goodness a couple of my friends are coming into town tomorrow to help wrap up all the last minute things and assist in the set up for the wedding!

What's on your mind today?  Link up and share what you're thinking out loud about!

Weekending - December 8, 2017

Happy Monday!  This weekend was so fun and I'm missing it already.  We had an action-packed few days.  Here's a recap ~

Friday night was spent doing a little prep for the weekend, but mostly watching The Crown.  We watch the first two episodes and I have to say that I'm hoping the next ones are a bit more exciting.  Don't get me wrong, the first two were good - but not GREAT in my opinion.  Looking forward to seeing a few more before making my final judgement of the season.

Saturday was B-U-S-Y and I loved it!  To some people, a day packed with activity every minute might seem horrible.  But I'm just not that person.  We started bright and early waiting in line at the new Nothing Bundt Cake store in Fairview Heights.  The first 50 people in line got a free bundtlet each month for a year.  Eric was a great sport about waiting in line with me in the freezing cold temperature.  #whyIlovemyhusband

The owner was so kind to pass out certificates to not 50, but 70 people who were in line.  Thank goodness he did because I was number 60 and Eric was number 61!  I'll be letting you know which bundt flavor we choose throughout the year.

If you haven't stopped by the Nothing Bundt Cake store at 5915 N. Illinois Street in Fairview Heights, you are really missing something.  Besides the cakes being wonderful, they have adorable little gifts.  Worth a drop in.

As soon as we had our free bundtlet for a year cards in our hands, we high tailed it to my home town to see our nephew, Kayden, play in his dribbling optional basketball game.  Watching these little guys play was so much fun.  They really gave it their all!

His brothers and sister were there to cheer him on.  All in all, he had quite the cheering section!

After a quick lunch with the family, we headed back home to get ready for dinner with Kayla and Ian.  We made reservations at the hot spot Olive and Oak a month ago and I was so excited to finally be trying this restaurant.  It did not disappoint!

Sunday was another fun-filled day.  Before Eric had to head off to work, we were able to enjoy going to church together.  In the afternoon I was hosting my first (of what I hope becomes many) cookie making day with my daughter-in-law Kayla, her sister and her mom.

I had whipped up a personalized hot pad mitt full of goodies for each of the girls.  I'm telling you, my love for my Silhouette continues to grow as I explore more and more projects it can do for me.  I die cut their names from heat transfer vinyl and just used my iron to stick them on the mitts.  So cute!!

We managed to make six different types of cookies in the afternoon and each of them had a nice little box of goodies to take home.

In the evening I switched gears from making cookies to making Grinch hats.  My friend, Tracy, and her niece Kaitlyn came over to lend a hand with this project.  Kaitlyn's dance troop will be sporting these as part of their costume in their dance recital.  Again with the help of my Silhouette, I cut little Grinch faces and heat pressed them onto stocking hats.  So simple!

After a weekend full of fun, it was great to crawl into bed under the glow of the Christmas tree we have in our bedroom.  Putting a tree in this space was one of the best decisions I've ever made!  It sure makes closing out the day calm and peaceful!

Hope you had a great weekend.  Don't forget on Thursday we showing off our trees with a link up party.  Pop in and show us yours!

Weekending - October 27, 2017

Happy Halloween!!  It's Tuesday and I'm just now writing my weekending post.  For some reason I just wasn't in the mood to sit down on Sunday night and write a post, soooooo it's coming at you on Tuesday.

Last weekend was a fairly low key one for me.  Friday night I popped in the grocery store on my way home and gathered the ingredients to make some food for a friend.  It had turned cold in St. Louis so I decided to whip up some Loaded Potato Soup for dinner and curl up on the couch with some good TV.   A relaxing Friday night was just what I needed!

Recipe HERE

Saturday morning I was up bright and early to get started with my labor of love making the food I was taking to my friend's house.  I haven't been spending a lot of time in my kitchen recently and I had kind of forgotten how much I love cooking.  Lasagna was on my list of things to make and I wanted to try something new.  The last of my tomatoes from the garden were ripe and I wanted to use them for the sauce in the lasagna.  I'm sure this is nothing new to some of you, but it was new to me and I have to share.

I simply cut the tomatoes in half (or quartered for the larger ones) and put them in a bowl.  Drizzled a little olive oil over the top and put in some seasonings.  I used fresh thyme and basil from the garden, kosher salt, pepper and garlic.  Poured them out on a foiled-lined baking sheet and let them roast in a 375 degree oven for about 25 minutes.

When they were done roasted, I dumped them in my Ninja and blended to a fine consistency.  It was delicious!  Why had I not been doing this forever?!?  Sorry Prego - I think you just lost my business.

Eric and I went to our favorite spot after church place for lunch on Sunday before he had to scoot off to work.  Peel Pizza in downtown O'Fallon, Illinois just introduced their fall menu.

Their small plates are great for sharing.  We each got a cup of soup and shared the Brown Ale Sliders and Chicken Spedini.  YUM!  Just the memory from my pictures makes me want to go back soon!

Sunday evening we had Trunk or Treat at our church and I helped my friends Tracy and Jody out with their trunk.  We had a fishing booth and the kids LOVED it!  My only contribution to the decorations was the "Gone Fishing" banner.

My job was to stay behind the sheet and as the kids put their fishing pole "in the water".  I would attached a colored fish to the pole and give a little tug.  The kids would pull their pole out and see what color fish they caught.  Tracy and Jody had buckets with different prizes for each color.

We were frozen by the end of the night, but it was a ton of fun!

When I got home, I promptly crawled under a blanket and hung out on the couch for the rest of the night binge watching Nashville.  That show...  I have to be reminded that Rayna and Deacon are not real people!!

And just like that the weekend was over.  Can you believe that this was the last weekend in October?!?  This month went by so fast and now the holidays are knocking on the doorstep.  Only eight more weekends until Christmas!!

Five on Friday - August 25, 2017

Happy Friday!  This week has flown by for me.  How about for you?  We had the excitement of the eclipse on Monday.  On Tuesday Eric and I watched our friends' son play in a Frontier League baseball game.  Then on Wednesday I met a friend I hadn't seen in 8 years for dinner while she was in St. Louis on business.  Whew - it's been a fun, but fast week!

I barely had time to get my five together for this week, but here they are ~

1.  National Kiss and Make Up Day
Do you have someone in your life that you haven't spoken to and it's been so long you don't even remember why?  Well, today is your day to put that behind you.  It's National Kiss and Make Up Day!!  End the quarrels, the arguments, the fights and make up!

2.  Cookies and Screeem M&M's
You might want to add a trip to Target to your to-do list this weekend so you can pick up a bag of these M&M's Cookies & Screeem treats.  We now have Oreo flavored M&M's!!  These little babies have white chocolate centers and dark chocolate coatings all covered in a black and white speckled shell.  Sounds pretty darn tasty to me!

3.  All Saints
John Corbett is hitting the big screen today in All Saints.  Here's the summary from Movie Guide:

ALL SAINTS is a powerful story that’s very heartrending and entertaining. Pastor Michael is on fire for God. When a group of Burmese Karen Anglican refugees show up at his church, his heart goes out to them. Praying about how to feed and take care of them, Michael hears from God that they should turn the beautiful land around the church into a farm. After alienating the big box store trying to buy the land, he convinces the church council to give him until January to make a go of the farm and the church. That is easier said than done.

ALL SAINTS is extremely well-directed and acted. It’s not a big action adventure, but the jeopardy is intense and the dialogue is real. The strong Christian faith in the movie, which leads to signs and wonders, is to be applauded. Although it has a few ambivalent comments, they are very few. The story is uplifting. ALL SAINTS is a must-see movie for people who want stories with faith and values and people who need stories with faith and values.

Sounds like this would be an excellent pick for a family movie night!  It's definitely on my list to see.

4.  Whisk Wiper
It's no secret I have a soft spot for gadgets, but this one looks super cool.  The Whisk Wiper scraps not only your whisk, but the bowl too!  No more batter all over the counter tops.  Click HERE to check it out.  This one comes with a whisk for a perfect fit.

5.  True statement...

Now let's get through Friday and start the weekend!!  Eric and I are joining some friends for the Midwest Salute to the Arts tonight in Fairview Heights, IL.  If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity this weekend, head to Everett Moody Park in Fairview Heights!  A hundred artists will be gathered to display (and sell) their creations all weekend long.  There is also a great entertainment line up.  Visit their website (HERE) for a full list of activities.  It's fun for the whole family!

Weekending - March 13, 2015

Happy Monday!  Here in the St. Louis area, we got such a welcome break from winter.  Both days of the weekend we could walk around outside without coats and, man, did that feel good!  It makes me smile thinking that soon (hopefully very soon) we can shut the door on winter and leave the house on a daily basis without coats to keep us warm.  I'm ready for Spring -- how about you?

Do you know what my biggest accomplishment was this weekend?  I'm totally caught up on Scandal. Sad, I know, that this was my biggest accomplishment.  Hello, my name is Penny and I'm a binge watcher.  Eric has been a real trooper during my last week-and-a-half of binge watching.  He's brought me food and drinks, tissues when something sad happened in my life with Olivia Pope and helped me figure out exactly how to keep the episodes streaming.  Yes - Best.Husband.Ever!

Surprisingly, I did do a few other things.  Saturday was my friend Lauren's bridal shower.  Her soon-to-be aunts hosted the event and you could see how excited they are to be welcoming her into their family.  The shower was held at One 19 North Tapas and Wine Bar in Kirkwood.  Adorable place.  The food was wonderful and we had sangria.  Great little desserts.  Adorable nail polish favor.  All this equals GREAT shower.

Lauren with her wonderful annts-to-be who hosted the shower.

Friends from work
I gave Lauren something off her registry plus a little something I etched.  If you missed my posts that talked about how very much I love my Silhouette Cameo machine, let me just say it one more time.  I love my Silhouette Cameo!  It makes etching glass a breeze.  Check out the dish I etched for her -- it's fun to give people personalized gifts.  I'll be doing a little 411 post on how to do this soon.

Saturday night I did manage to pull myself away from the television long enough to make dinner for Eric, Ian and Kayla and watch the St. Louis Blues Hockey game.  Check out these shoes we gave Kayla for Christmas.  How great are these?!?  A friend of a friend paints on shoes and she came up with this design for my St. Louis Blues loving daughter-in-law.  I'll have more information on them on my Five on Friday this week.

My crockpot saved me on Sunday.  Our meal cooked all day while I was -- you know, watching Scandal.  See what a fantastic multitasker I am!  Check out this sandwich -- Pepperoncini Beef.  Recipe coming on Tuesday.  I know that's St. Patrick's Day and most people will be talking about green stuff and corned beef.  Maybe that will be me next year, but this year I'll be sharing my Pepperoncini Pork recipe.

We decided to cap off the weekend and celebrate the warm weather with getting ice cream from one of our favorite ice cream stands -- Dairy Haven.  It's one of those places that have plethora of wonderful novelties on their menu, but I get the same thing every single time we go there - a medium black raspberry shake.  YUM!  This establishment is closed during the winter, so the fact they are open is a sure sign that summer is coming.

I'm signing off so I can pull together some stuff for the day ahead.  I have several posts planned for this week on the blog.  Hope you stop back by and check them out.

Check out what others were up to this weekend.
