Five on Friday - August 11, 2023

So excited that today is Friday!  We have our niece and nephews visiting this weekend and are so excited to be hosting them!  We have all kinds of fun stuff planned like SkyZone, a waterpark, and maybe even a short ride on the Amtrak train!  I know we will be exhausted come Monday, but our hearts will be full.

Now, on to my five for today ~

1.  Krispy Kreme Fall Flavors
It might still feel like summer, but fall flavors are starting to creep in!  Krispy Kreme started selling their new fall flavors - Pumpkin Spice, Pumpkin Spice Cake Donut, Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Swirl, and Pumpkin Spice Maple Pecan.  If that doesn't scream fall, I don't know what does!

2.  Back to School Time
It's back to school time and that means we'll be seeing those big yellow buses on the road and in our neighborhoods.  Please remind your kiddos of the bus stop safety rules mentioned below.  An average of 121 people are killed in school bus accidents every year according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Let's try to lower that number this year!

I ordered this blouse last week from Amazon.  It's so darn cute!  The Swiss dot fabric is soft and comfortable.  I picked the yellow color and it's the perfect shade.  If yellow is not your thing, it comes in 24 other colors.  I'm so tempted to get one in a couple other colors.  One is bound to be perfect for you!

Rhys Bowen's newest book, The Paris Assignment, was released this week.  I recently read her book, Where the Sky Begins, and loved it.  That prompted me to want to read this book.  Well, the title might have been the reason too.  It seems anything with the word "Paris" in it I want to read!  Another selling point is it's free to read if you have Kindle Unlimited.  Here's the summary ~
A courageous wife, mother, and resister confronts the devastation of World War II in a heartbreaking and hopeful novel by the bestselling author of The Venice Sketchbook and The Tuscan Child.

Londoner Madeleine Grant is studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when she marries charismatic French journalist Giles Martin. As they raise their son, Olivier, they hold on to a tenuous promise for the future. Until the thunder of war sets off alarms in France.

Staying behind to join the resistance, Giles sends Madeleine and Olivier to the relative safety of England, where Madeleine secures a job teaching French at a secondary school. Yet nowhere is safe. After a devastating twist of fate resulting in the loss of her son, Madeleine accepts a request from the ministry to aid in the war effort. Seizing the smallest glimmer of hope of finding Giles alive, she returns to France. If Madeleine can stop just one Nazi, it will be the start of a valiant path of revenge.

Though her perseverance, defiance, and heart will be tested beyond imagining, no risk is too great for a brave wife and mother determined to fight and survive against inconceivable odds.

5.  Here's a thought...

Have a fabulous weekend!  We are going to enjoy the heck out of our little visitors and hope to survive until their parents come on Sunday.  I'm already dreading how quiet it will be when they leave.

2023 Bee Kind Tiered Tray

Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday!  Thanks for stopping by.  Today I'm thinking about a recent change ~

Our kitchen window got a makeover this week!  The last tiered-tray, our tea party theme, had been on display for a while so we were more than ready for a change.  It's now buzzing with a rendition of the bee theme we've used before, with a couple new twists!

Each of the tiers have a different "bee" theme, each reminding us of a positive thought.

The new addition to the scene this year was a buzz teapot I picked up.  It's so cute, it's taking center stage.

The window is rounded out on each side with just a few more bee items.

Now it's your turn.  What are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!

Five on Friday - August 4, 2023

Friday is here! It's a special day at our house - it's our daughter-in-law's birthday! Happy birthday, Kayla! From the moment Kayla became a part of our family, she has filled our hearts with happiness and love. We are so very lucky that she's a part of our lives!

Now, on to my five for this week ~

Ann Pachett's newest book was released this week and it went straight on my to-be-read list!  It also went straight to being Reese's book club selection.  If your plan is to grab the audiobook, you'll hear Meryl Streep reading.  What's the book about?  Here's the summary from Amazon ~
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

2.  National Mustard Day
Saturday is National Mustard Day! There are so many variations of mustard - dijon, ground, yellow, spicy. A few "lucky" people are going to be able to try the limited edition Mustard Skittles. Personally, I could go my whole lifetime and not be sad if I didn't taste a mustard-flavored Skittle! Would you like to try it?

This handy, laminated keyboard shortcuts guide is the perfect reference to have around when you're working on the computer. It's a 2-page quick reference guide that provides 209 keyboard shortcuts for Windows 11 and 10. The laminated finish will keep it looking great for a long time too. Get one for yourself - you won't be sorry!

4.  The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart
The best-seller book The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is playing out in a series on Amazon Prime starting this week. Three episodes dropped yesterday with another four still to come. Sigourney Weaver stars in the show and early reviews say she's done a great job. Here's the summary of the show ~
After losing her parents to a mysterious fire, nine-year-old Alice Hart is raised by her grandmother June on a flower farm where she learns there are secrets within secrets. But years on, an unearthed betrayal sees Alice forced to face her past.

5.  How true is this...

Now it's on to the weekend!  We are headed to my hometown for the community homecoming, Old Settlers.  It will be a little bittersweet this year without my dad there.  For decades you would have found him behind the deep fryer frying up fish for the fish sandwiches.  I'm still looking forward to seeing friends and being with the rest of my family.  Hope your weekend is wonderful!  See you back next week!

What I Read in July 2023

Hello friends!  Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday where I talk about something on my mind and invite you to link up and do the same.  On the first Thursday of the month I like to reflect on the books I read the previous month, so let's look at what I read in July ~

The month was heavy with reading the Sweeney House series by Cecelia Scott.  I read the first two books in the series last month and polished off the next three in July.  I'm currently reading book 6, then I'll have to wait until February when book 7 comes out.  They are just fun little stories that are easy, and quick to read.  They are also free if you have Kindle Unlimited.  I'm invested in the Sweeney family!  The characters have become like dear friends and I'm rooting for their triumphs.
The Sweeney House Series

The Sweeney House is a landmark inn on the shores of Cocoa Beach, built and owned by the same family for decades. After the unexpected passing of their beloved patriarch, Jay, this family must come together like never before. They may have lost their leader, but the Sweeneys are made of strong stuff. Together on the island paradise where they grew up, this family meets every challenge with hope, humor, and heart, bathed in sunshine and the unconditional love they learned from their father.

The Paris Daughter was the book I listened to on my way to and from work last month.  This is the second book by Kristen Harmel I've read.  The first one was The Book of Lost Names.  My love for that one prompted me to grab The Paris Daughter as soon as it came out.  It did not disappoint!  I loved it too.  Here's the summary ~
Paris, 1939: Young mothers Elise and Juliette become fast friends the day they meet in the beautiful Bois de Boulogne. Though there is a shadow of war creeping across Europe, neither woman suspects that their lives are about to irrevocably change.

When Elise becomes a target of the German occupation, she entrusts Juliette with the most precious thing in her life—her young daughter, playmate to Juliette’s own little girl. But nowhere is safe in war, not even a quiet little bookshop like Juliette’s Librairie des Rêves, and, when a bomb falls on their neighborhood, Juliette’s world is destroyed along with it.

More than a year later, with the war finally ending, Elise returns to reunite with her daughter, only to find her friend’s bookstore reduced to rubble—and Juliette nowhere to be found. What happened to her daughter in those last, terrible moments? Juliette has seemingly vanished without a trace, taking all the answers with her. Elise’s desperate search leads her to New York—and to Juliette—one final, fateful time.

Now it's your turn - what are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!
