Five on Friday - December 18, 2020

Here we are - the last Friday before Christmas!  I'm so excited to wrap a few things up this weekend.  I'm embarrassed to say our Christmas cards are still in pieces, but I'm determined to have them stamped and in the mail by tomorrow.  Before I start the signing and sealing, let's look at my five for today ~

Do you watch The Great British Baking Show?  We're caught a few episodes and really like it.  Their new cookbook is hitting the standing on December 22!  Pre-order now and you just might have it in time to slip it under the Christmas tree.  Here's the summary from Amazon ~
Love to Bake is The Great British Bake Off's best collection yet - recipes to remind us that baking is the ultimate expression of thanks, togetherness, celebration and love.

Pop round to a friend's with tea and sympathy in the form of Chai Crackle Cookies; have fun making Paul's Rainbow-coloured Bagels with your family; snuggle up and take comfort in Sticky Pear & Cinnamon Buns or a Pandowdy Swamp Pie; or liven up a charity cake sale with Mini Lemon & Pistachio Battenbergs or Prue's stunningRaspberry & Salted Caramel Eclairs. Impressive occasion cakes and stunning bakes for gatherings are not forgotten - from a novelty frog birthday cake for a children's party, through a towering croquembouche to wow your guests at the end of dinner, to a gorgeous, but easy-to-make wedding cake that's worthy of any once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Throughout the book, judges' recipes from Paul and Prue will hone your skills, while lifelong favourites from the 2020 bakers offer insight into the journeys that brought the contestants to the Bake Off tent and the reasons why they - like you - love to bake.

Sir Paul McCartney has a new CD releasing today!  This is his 18th solo album.  Amazon's editorial review says this, "Paul McCartney will release McCartney III on December 18th. Paul hadn't planned to release an album in 2020, but in the isolation of "Rockdown," he found himself fleshing out some existing musical sketches and creating new ones. Before long an eclectic collection of spontaneous songs would become McCartney III: a stripped, self-produced solo work marking the opening of a new decade. Built mostly from live takes of Paul on vocals & guitar/piano, overdubbing bass, drums, etc. atop this foundation."

3.  Popeyes Chocolate Beignets
A new item recently showed up on the Popeyes menu and I'm excited to give it a try!  What is it?  Chocolate Beignets!  These are not your typical beignets.  They are filled with melted Hershey's chocolate!  In true New Orleans-style, they are covered with powdered sugar.  You can pick up packs of three, six, and twelve.  They are only here for a limited time, so get yours while they are here!

4.  Saturn and Jupiter
It's coming!  On Monday, December 21 Saturn and Jupiter will align to form the Christmas Star.  This rare spectacle hasn't happened at night in nearly 800 years.  NASA says if you'd like to see it (and who wouldn't!), this is what you need to do ~
  • Find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, such as a field or park. Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen even from most cities.
  • An hour after sunset, look to the southwestern sky. Jupiter will look like a bright star and be easily visible. Saturn will be slightly fainter and will appear slightly above and to the left of Jupiter until December 21, when Jupiter will overtake it and they will reverse positions in the sky.
  • The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you have binoculars or a small telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting the giant planet.

5.  Where are your packages???

We have nothing in particular on the books for this weekend.  There's a charity organization stopping by tomorrow to pick up a donation.  I'm going to try to add to the pile I already have together and get some more things out of the house.  I might pull the sourdough starter out of the frig and bake a loaf.  Stop back in on Monday for the summary!

Hallmark Christmas Movies

Hello!  Welcome to Thinking Out Loud Thursday where I talk about something on my mind and invite you to link up and share what you're thinking out loud about today.

I have been hooked on Hallmark movies more than ever this year.  They are cheesy and very predictable and I love them anyway.  They offer the escape from reality that's particularly needed this year.  Hats off to them for bringing us 40 new movies in the midst of a pandemic!  If you're needing a checklist to make sure you caught them all, here you go ~

We stream the Hallmark channels on Frndly for about $6 a month.  Eric is happy because Frndly also comes with the Weather Channel.  As many movies as I've been consuming, we are definitely getting our money's worth!

I haven't gone so far as to start buying all the merchandise pertaining to Hallmark movies, but I have downloaded the Hallmark App.  It's free in the app store and lets you check off all the movies you've watched and send you reminders when others are showing.  If I happen to get some Hallmark movie merch for Christmas, I wouldn't be sad about it!

If you're watching with others, there are a few fun games related to the movies you might want to bust out.  First, we have the Hallmark Christmas Movie Drinking Game.  You might want to save this one for evening viewing because I would be blitzed in the first 20 minutes!  I saw this on the Country Living website and I promptly subscribed to the magazine!

Second, we have a more family-friendly game - Hallmark Christmas Movie Bingo.  Visit The Kittchen website for several adorable printable cards.  You better believe that next Christmas when this pandemic is over, I'm throwing a Hallmark Movie Watch Party and this game will be on the agenda!

Here's some fun facts about the Hallmark Christmas movies~
Most of the movies are filmed in Canada
The budget for snow is approximately $50,000 per movie
Each movie only takes a couple of weeks to film
Filming mostly occurs in the summer

If you're needing to get in the holiday spirit this year, pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate and cozy up with a Hallmark Christmas movie.  With all the snow and love, it's sure to do the trick!

Now it's your turn - what are you thinking out loud about today?  Link up and share!

Weekending - December 11, 2020

Happy Monday!  My weekending posts have been pretty hit or miss lately because, frankly, I just haven't been taking a lot of pictures on the weekend.  This weekend was no different with the lack of pictures, but I thought I'd do a little recap anyway.

We have already used our gas fireplace more this year than I think we did the entire winter last year.  And I don't see us stopping any time soon!  If we are in the family room, chances are the fireplace is on.  So for most of the weekend, this was my view.

Sparkey the Elf has been regularly appearing for Eric (my husband).  He's gotten a kick out of finding him every day and, in turn, I get a kick out of his excitement.  Win - Win!  Here's how Sparkey showed up this weekend ~

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

A while back I mentioned that I was coordinating a donation for a senior living facility near our subdivision.  My thought was our subdivision could adopt the facility and provide the residents some holiday cheer.  I put a request on our neighborhood Facebook page for donations of movie candy, tissues, and a card.  Many of the kids made homemade cards, which I'm sure the residents will LOVE!  The neighbors came through in a huge way!  We loaded up the donations and will be dropping them off today.  I'll be coordinating a similar type of donation around Valentine's Day and then again for Grandparents Day.  If you're looking for a feel-good activity, this one is a winner!  Many senior care facilities are located near subdivisions.  Take one on and get your neighbors involved.

Saturday evening I went to my son and daughter-in-law's house to make some holiday gifts.  We sat 6 feet apart and wore masks just to be on the safe side.  It was so fun spending that time with them!  I would love to show you our finished product, but I don't want to ruin the surprise for the couple of friends I'm giving them to.

Sunday morning I got up and made Raspberry and White Chocolate Scones.  They were yummy, but I still think my favorites are the Cherry Vanilla ones I blogged about HERE.

The afternoon was spent watching football.  The Chiefs made it interesting for a minute, but thank goodness were able to grab the win!

Last night we rented the newly released movie, Wild Mountain Thyme.  It's quirky and fun.  It actually felt like a good movie you would see in the theater.  Glad we bit the bullet and spent the $20 to rent it.

This week I really need to work on getting our Christmas cards in the mail.  I decided to make them this year instead of doing our normal picture ones.  Now I have pieces and parts strung all over the place!  Assembly needs to happen this week!  :)

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.  See you back here soon!

Five on Friday - December 11, 2020

Whoop!  Whoop!  It's Friday!  Let's get this weekend started with my five for today ~

1.  Peppermint Hot Cocoa Blizzard
The blizzard of the month at Dairy Queen is like a holiday in a cup.  Candy cane pieces, choco chunks, and cocoa fudge is blended together with signature DQ soft serve.  YUM!  Pop by your local DQ and pick one up when you're out looking at Christmas lights.

2.  Wild Mountain Thyme Movie
This movie looks like one we will love and it's out today.  Here's the summary from Rotten Tomatoes:
Headstrong farmer Rosemary Muldoon has her heart set on winning her neighbor Anthony Reilly's love. The problem is, Anthony seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father's plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew, Anthony is jolted into pursuing his dreams.

I love the idea of this book!  With the kids underfoot a little bit more than normal these days, you might be looking for a fun activity to keep them busy for a bit.  This book offers a fun creative outlet and is full of Christmas illustrations.  It even comes with five washable, nontoxic ink pads.  This would make a great stocking stuffer!

4.  Cups and Stand
I've been toying around with the idea of setting up a coffee bar in our kitchen and I can't get these cups and stand out of my mind.  Aren't those cups beautiful!  The cups are a big 16 ounces, so they would be great for that big cup of coffee or tea to get you started in the morning.  And they ship before Christmas if you're still looking for that one special gift.

5.  Counting the days...

Now let's get this weekend started!  Our Christmas cards are sitting on the table half-finished and I'm hoping to spend some time on them this weekend.  I would be a happy camper if they were in the mail come Monday.  Wrapping is also high on the to-do list.  Pop in next week to see the progress.
