Five on Friday - February 5, 2021

Well, we've made it to Friday!  Feels pretty good, doesn't it.  This week - it was a dozy for me.  So much so I decided to take a vacation day today and do only things I love.  What's on the agenda?  I'm going to bake some sourdough, make some cards and do a lot of reading.  Before my perfect day begins, let me share my five for this week ~

Kristin Hannah's new book came out on Tuesday and is getting rave reviews all over the place.  Here's the summary from Amazon ~
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows.

By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive.

In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa―like so many of her neighbors―must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it―the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

2.  Firefly Lane
Speaking of Kristen Hannah, have you seen her book Firefly Lane come to life on Netflix?  I started watching it this week and my bet is I'll have knocked out all 10 episodes by the end of the weekend.  If you haven't read the book (and I'm one of you), it's about best friends Tully and Kate and their unbreakable bond.  I'm loving it so far!

3.  Dunkin Donuts Coffee
Are Mondays in the winter especially hard for you to get going?  Dunkin Donuts is giving us something to help with that every Monday in February - Free Coffee!  Interested?  First you have to sign up for DD Perks.  That's all it takes to get your medium hot coffee via their app or scan your loyalty ID QR code in-store for free with a purchase.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and so is Galentine's Day (February 13).  Amazon has a box of six cards that would be sure to brighten your friends' day.  The inside has the cute message of "From my happy heart to yours".  Buy a box (or two) and spread the love this year!

5.  Getting It Done...
Enjoy the weekend!  We are so looking forward to watching the big game on Sunday.  Hopefully the Chiefs with pull off a major victory!  Tonight I'm playing Skribbl.io online with some friends.  I'm so looking forward to that!  Then tomorrow we have a zoom with our small group from church.  It's going to be a fun-filled few day and I'm here for it!  Check back in on Monday for all the details.
